Ack, I hate that so much. Had it recently with one of my other PCs in the house, got stuck at the Windows XP loading screen and the bar just went backwards and forwards constantly. It's caused by numerous problems, and could be so many things it would be hard to say what to do. Although, since you specifically mention that you were using your headphones at the time, you could try to (if you use it) disable the onboard sound on your motherboard from the BIOS if you have the option to do so. Also, if your motherboard also has built in VGA, I would try booting off that instead of your graphics card to see if it lets you into Windows, as once you're in you can start to troubleshoot a lot better. Have you tried every option of safe mode? as sometimes it'll not let you into normal safe mode but sometimes does "with networking". So, just to rundown, I would:
1. Use onboard VGA if you have it, see if it boots
2. Unplug (not just turning off) any USB devices that you have attached
3. Disable onboard sound if you use it from BIOS
4. Try booting other options of safe mode if not already tried
If it's still not booting, insert your Windows XP CD and try doing a repair on the installation. Although just to note, when you insert and boot from the Windows XP CD it'll eventually come up with a "Press R to repair using the Recovery Console", ignore this and press enter to go to the next screen, at that screen you can press "R" again, this time it will "Repair Windows" and that's the option you want.
