Already discussed this with a few friends and we've come to teh conclusion that all this engine is good for is lame fucking console ports. 2 games have used the engine properly.
Bioshock which was amazing and Gears of War which is more.....7/10 game.
Stranglehold sucked shit.
Blacksite sucked shit.
Turok sucked shit.
The 2 vegas games are lame as hell (decently fun for a little while but generic crap to the extreme)
Unreal Tournament 3 was a pile of crap. Just a skin mod for the other ones.
I cannot speak for mass effect
Monster Madness could have been better if it didn't use fucking ageia

Well the publishers/developers are making more money with console games, so we can't expect more PC only/well made ports like KOTOR1 games in the future.

wow, great topic, the same thing was on my mind..
I was thinking about the Unreal Engines (esp. III) and the "next generation" of graphic quality.. and how it's all dumbed down for consoles..
Overall, i hate this pos called UE (Tho i love Unreal Tournament itself.. the 99' one), no matter if it's using the 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 version... it can ruin a game even with nice and solid gameplay..
all the UE based games have long loading times, all of them have insane alt-tabbing load time.. and the recent ones are way- too consolised... lack of AA,lack of video options ingame, tons of BLUR, BLUR, BLUR and BLUR.., outworthly glow.. did i mentioned the BLUR?
There is one exception- Bioshock, it's flawlessly done, beautiful, and without any of the above stated issues..
i like S.W.A.T. 4 for the gameplay but i hate it for the loading times
Vegas 1 & 2 have terrible optimization & use of the engine- but are nice..
but i guess from now on --> the Unreal Engine logo = console port with much BLUR

you liked airbourne? I tried to get into that game so many times, but i swear, the moh series has lost its touch. it used to be top of the line graphics and gameplay but airbourne was lacking in both. graphics werent all that nice and the game play wasnt fun at all

Licensed by Alchemic Productions, Clive Barker’s Jericho is currently in development at Mercury Steam. The game will utilise the Madrid-based studio’s new proprietary next-generation graphics engine to bring the monsters and demons from the depths of Barker’s imagination to life.

Mass Effect, Bioshock and Gears of War (360 version) all get high grades from me.
Although yeah there are quite alot of shitty UE3 games, most have been mentioned.
In either case, you can't really blame an engine for crappy games, it's like blaming the ocean for the existence of sharks.

The thing with the UE is that it looks at least halfway decent on screenshots, at least if the publishers use photoshop to make them nicer.
The devs just buy the engine, don't have much programming to do and slap a game on it.
The name "Unreal" still sounds like quality to most people who aren't that much into games (speak: casual gamers), so they think a game using that engine will be quite good.
You'd think that with the work saved by not having to code the engine themselves, the devs would put more effort in the game. But no, it seems like they say "Hey, we just saved ourselves some time and money, let's finish this fast."
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”

Sounds to me like these company's are guilty of being a business. wait they are... It does suck for us of course, but in the end they are just another company going for the financial pie.

AVA is a pretty decent game. Easily one of my favourite online shooter, but could use a few more maps.

This topic =
There are good games, there are bad games, as with every engine. You're seeing lots of bad on this one because of its widespread (due to Epic's aggressive marketing and mainly because there is no other engine).

Sure, yeah, that's part of it. But I don't see the Crysis engine as a good engine either. It's only good for pretty islands and water, nothing else.

Read somewhere that SWAT 5 was licensed to use UE 3...or did I dream that?.

It's a pretty solid rumour at this point, since 2kgames have multiple licenses for UE3. And since SWAT 4 used UE2x, it would be natural to use UE3, especially after BioShock.
JBeckman wrote: | There's also a few UE3 MMO titles in development but there's not much known about those |
Way too many actually; Fury, Huxley, APB, A4, Avatar, BK Project, Crimecraft, Sephiroth 2, Project M, DC Comics/Universe Online, Sony Online Mercenary, The Agency, Free Realms, EverQuest 3, Vanguard: Second Expansion, Viking, Sony Online Fantasy MMO, Stargate Worlds, Global Agenda, X Project, and 17 more unannounced.
Nothing wrong with the engine. Part of the problem is that it's mostly used for dumbed down console games, such as stranglehold, blacksite, turok, vegas (yes, ubisoft couldn't use this engine properly if you dangled a manual in front of their faces), hour of victory, airborne, etc.
When using the engine's potential properly, you end up with some great games (which unfortunately are few rather than many at the moment): Gears of War (played it on the 360 way back) and BioShock. I have yet to play Mass Effect (will on the PC), but I expect it to be great as well. Talking about the technical side of the games here, although playing them goes for the same in this case.
UT3 is great in those terms, but it has other issues (interface, number of players playing, etc).
Roboblitz and Undertow are both examples of a nice and different use of the engine. So although were seeing a massive amount of FPS games coming (and it looks like even more MMOs) out running on UE3, the engine is not at all confined to those borders.
I believe the reasons for the multitude of most average or less than average games running on UE3 are:
1. The console market
It's beginning to feel as old as the stone age now, and as such I am not saying anything new, but many of the games running on UE3, like many other games, are dumbed down simple-as-fuck games that have been made just in order to satisfy an audience craving exactly that (you can see plenty of these in the examples above).
2. Cost-saving businesses (or businesses in general)
UE3 can make descent good looking games out of the box without requiring too much efforts. I am sure many developers could, in their dreams, take the time to make great looking games such as the ones mentioned above. But reality is that they are confined to what the publishers decide. "Here's a deadline for the game, please don't extend it". "Since the standard is already pretty good on UE3, why should we spend a longer development time and more resources on making a game?". I am thinking that this is exactly how most publishers think today. After all they are businesses, and after all, they are just here to make money.
In the end, it's as LeoNatan said: There are good games and bad games, as with every engine.

Not only do the games look good on the engine with little work, the tools that come with it are just so good, it's very hard to say no to.
