The RTS-like games are not about strategy. They are about quick clicking, moving the mouse very quickly and knowing the keybord shortcuts to unit production.
Try some Total War games and Europa Universalis. For space strategy games, the Space Empires.

Yep as far as i know Dune 2 was the pioneer of RTS, awesome game. It still sort of gets you hooked if you sit down and play it for a while.

They are middle of the ground. Still about fast clicking, much less about strategy.

The Combat Mission series is an abstract world war II game that is absolutely brilliant once you get used to it. Close Combat are real time strategy games that are very good also (each is different, the third version is the best, but the others have some good aspects too) - these games don't have an equal in the market. You may wish to try Soldiers: Heroes of World War II as well, the original anyway, it's better than Company of Heroes in strategy/tactics and is very quintisential. Hearts of Iron II - Doomsday - it's graphically crap and if you are new to this publisher it has a steep 'learning' curve where you get used to the interface and so on, but the games so addictive and engrossing once you hit that sweet spot. They also make other games such as Europa et al. Homeworld series is very good as well.

The first mainstream RTS. There were more, but they were and are pretty obscure.

And I recommend Company of Heroes, aswell.

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday. I doesn't have the best graphics, but the gameplay is great if you got the sufficient amount of time for it and like that kind of strategy games.
