This has probably been asked a bunch of times, but I don't know much about 360s so here goes.
If I purchase a CORE system (the one without the 20GB HDD), can I buy one and slap it in later?

lol yah headshot, I only turned into a zombie.
So do you have to buy the "official omg microsoft hdd version" specifically made for the 360 that costs 8x as much or has the scene figured out a way to put any ol' hdds in there?

You have to buy the one from MS, btw it's much more expensive to the buy the hd later, better get the premium pack right away.

lol
Even if you could just get any ol'hdd, surely you would need the microsoft enclosure that comes with the original 360 hdd anyway?
May the NFOrce be with you always.

Play original Xbox1 games I think. Also I think some games like Oblivion take advantage of it for caching and quick loading. And then there are downloads from xbl of course.

Yeah, you can't download any demo's or addons without a HDD! There is loads of media to be had for free if you have a HDD and an internet connection.
Also Headshot is right, it improves load times for alot of the high profile games.

EDIT: lol, sold out before I could even load the page once... how the hell could anyone else load it...

To save you have to buy a memory unit at least.

I can get my hands on a new 120GB hard drive for €60. The features I'm looking for are reduced load times and no more texture popups in GTA4. Is it worth the money?
Currently I'm using the 256MB memory card that came with my Core system, as I don't have an HDD at all right now. By the way, is the install to HDD option still available on flashed systems? And booting games without discs, is that still impossible?
Thank you

So much for Microsoft saying they're not selling the 250GB separately then, eh? Guess I'll pick one of those up in the New Year!

Most likely just a spare caddy (they're made dirt cheap) and one of the WD Blue 250GB drives - which often go for around $50.

But what about the HDD in general: is it worth getting?

I install all of my games. It depends, but for most game I find it worth it.
It takes about 7 to 10 minutes to install a game, but for many games loading times are reduced by like 30 seconds (HAWX), so it's reasonable to install it. RE5 also loads amazingly fast from HDD.
I'd say it's worth it, but get a cheap one from DX or so (you really don't have Paypal?!).
