Few questions for seasoned pirates:)
If I download copyrighted material from somebody elses internet connection, who is considered responsible under UK law?
Does anyone have any experience of being warned about downloading material, in this case an XBOX 360 game via bittorent, i.e. who is likely to have made the complaint, (developer or third party?), what's likely to happen next etc?
Can anybody recommend a decent NNTP service and binary news reader lol.
Cheers for any info.

giganews offers 'encrypted' usenet access ... both are fairly priced for unlimited access with a high retention.

I think their more likley to go after those who are major seeders in pirated material. They get rid of seeders then they get rid of leechers. It also depends on what you download that "they" contact, a buddy of mine got an email from warner bros, others get emails from their ISP. I believe it's a warning then they take legal action.

Under English law it is not illegal to download copyrighted material. Anyone who says it is will never cite a case or statutory provision to say so. It is, however, illegal to 'distribute' it, so uploading counts. But it's completely legal to download it off a news-server. The EU is harmonising this area of the law with their 'Copyright Nazi directive', however I'm not sure of its direct effect status or what it even says.
giganews wins for NNTP.

Sad thing is, it's the most excitement I've had in a while, got one eye on Sky News, the other checking the curtains.

Nah, just an email from our ISP stating that we had been logged downloading nba2k7_blah_blah_etc.rar using Bittorrent and that they wouldn't divulge our details.
Probably an overreaction but the worrying thing is how little information they gave, probably because they don't know themselves, and thinking about it there stance is probably 'If you want our customer information you're going to have take formal legal action'.
We're currently on a 60gig a month service which is Newnets heaviest option and it doesn't take a genius to work out that nobody takes out a heavy user contract without downloading something they shouldn't. So I guess it's in there business interests to protect the customers that are paying the most money.

File name isn't conclusive evidence, turn encryption on also.
