Yeah that awesome sentence Smile

Need some help here, i decided to format my old computer so that my friends could use it when they are here and so that i can use it to play videos etc.

Bear in mind that this computer, despite alot of slowdowns from crappy maintenance, worked without any problems. I start the windows xp installation and the installation works fine as it formats c:\, copies the files for the installation and then reboots.

This is where the problems start. I get the adorable DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. Now from my point of view this should be a MBR error, which led me to just try another harddrive, no success with that either. So i've tried it on a 120GB IDE-drive, a 40GB IDE-drive and a 160GB SATA-drive. All with the same results. I am kind of at a loss here. So any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check to see if harddrive booting is even enabled.

Make sure that the correct bootorder is set in BIOS and the correct device is set. Moreover make sure you don't need any special SATA drivers in that.

Whenever you change HDD's the bootorder and boot device in BIOS will be reset.

Is your HD recognized in the Bios? If not, unplug the ribbon cables from your MB and HD and plug back in. Also try the power cables.

Well yeah.

The hdd's are visible in the bios and in the startup. And as i said ive tried with both ide-drives and sata-drives. No difference. I can also see the hdd's if i go into normal dos. All the files are there as they should. And yes, the bootorder is correct.

theres a bug that means if it was not formatted with the default block size then windows will fail once it restarts whilst installing.
