Nobody is going to risk to emulate xbox live as you will get microsoft on your tail and that's something you really don't want.
But I guess it should be possible.

nothing like that out there, but I suppose it would be possible to emulate it like battle.net is emulated.
you'd need a real xbox live account and then sniff the packets and check everything out which takes ages to do and yeah, as Evangeliz mentioned, if microsoft finds out, and they would find out you're done for. I don't think they'd let anyone do something like that.

yeah, IF he has a modchip that can be turned off and a locked HDD and all that, and he wants to play with his friends so they'd need a modchip that can be turned off as well and a copy of the game and an xbox live subscription and broadband internet.

It sucks that more and more games do not support System Link...
That was one of the big marketing feature when XBOX was launched.... to be able to play over a LAN.
As said above, I'm sure the reason why its not in the majority of games anymore comes directly from Microsoft... They realised it was possible to play online without their LIVE service.
Call me paranoid, but I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft would insist on developers not to code sys link in their games anymore.
Sad, and sucks... My favorite sports titles from SEGA do not support sys link, they did back in 2003 (2K3 serie).

Actually all my LIVE games I have support system link except one (NFL 2k5). Rainbow Six 3, Wolfenstein, and Midtown Madness 3 (Microsoft) support system link. Also most of the system link games out there are from MS. Upcomming Halo 2 is gonna have system link.
