|
 |
Ok bear with me because Im not the most knowledgeable of people when it comes to this kind of thing but basically I have been using realvnc to connect to my home pc from work for a couple of years now and it has been working great for the most part!
I had an issue where people were able to accecss my pc via the no authenitication required exploit in the earlier versions but now I have a new problem! I am using version 4.2 and setup my vnc server for port 5900. I had my router ports forwarded to my inside ip address and all was working well.
Yesterday the router crashed and I had to turn it off and back on again. Since then it has jumbled up all my lan connections and reassigned them different inside ip addresses. So I have reset the router to factory defaults and connected only my pc to ensure the router assigns me with 10.0.0.1. I then used NAT to forward 5900 to 10.0.0.1 and I am able to connect to the inside ip with no problems.
When it comes to connecting to vnc via the external ip, it is failing and I do not have a clue why. I have uninstalled and reinstalled realvnc simply because Im trying everything to get the damn thing working again but that hasnt fixed the problem so I think I can say the issue is not caused by the realvnc software. My XP firewall is also disabled and I have no other firewall software that I know of.
Never had this problem before but can anyone help please?
Is there some way of checking for installed firewalls?

Ok after speaking to a friend he suggested running a traceroute to see if I can see anything suspicious. I did this to the google website but the weird thing is that in none of the hops is there a mention of my external ip. There are a couple of similar ones which clearly belong to my isp but shouldnt my own appear on there? I also asked my friend to ping my external ip and he said he could not. So what does this mean? My ISP is somehow blocking my external ip address?

Your IP has changed? Sounds stupid but it could be the case.. Or the router has a firewall turned on which is blocking ICMP packets..

My IP is the same. It has been confirmed by my ISP who provided it. The router I have could be the issue. It doesnt have any firewall options in the gui configuration. The whole purpose of a router is the hardware firewall so it must have one. Plus I am able to ping my external ip from any machines on my lan but not from any machines not on my lan! Which says it all I think! My router is getting seriously old now I think. Ive had it a good 2 years. It doesnt even have an external reset button! lol. Its a Speedtouch 510 if anyone knows it!

Damn this crap is really pissing me off now! Its gonna end up in the bitching section before long!
I have disconnected all lan connections except my own pc, I have ran the speedtouch cd through it and there is an advanced set up option that allows you to disable the firewall which I know isnt really a good idea but I did it anyway and I still have the same problem! I have ran the network setup wizard again to configure my home lan settings just in case something was going on there and I am totally clueless as to what to do now! Other than buy a new adsl router which I dont actually want to have to do!

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A brand new adsl router and I have exactly the same GODDAMN problem!
This issue is seriously driving me mad now.
Unlike my Speedtouch the D-Link has firewall options galore so just as a test to rule out the possibility of it being the firewall on the router, I disable it. Lo and behold it made no difference! I, personally still think it is something the ISP is doing or has done! Its not the original router because the new router has the same problem! Its not my pc because the issue occurs when its not even on. I just cannot ping my external IP address!
Has anyone got any ideas whatsoever or suggestions I can try because I am seriously reaching the end of my tether with this!

Have you tried to scan your ip with Nmap or Nessus? If you have a Linux shell somewhere on the net you should scan your ip and check which ports are open. Your wan address can't be "blocked", otherwise you would have no external connection (internet) at all.
