"We have found many of the security changes planned for Vista alarming and likely to present sweeping challenges for PC gaming, especially for online distributed games. The central change that impacts all downloadable applications in Vista is the introduction of Limited User Accounts. LUA’s can already be found in Windows XP, but nobody uses them because of the onerous restrictions they place on usability. In Vista, LUA’s are mandatory and inescapable. Although Microsoft made some effort to soften the obstructions LUA’s place in the path of installing software in Vista, they still present a tremendous obstacle to downloadable game distribution and game compatibility with Vista in general."

And:

"Vista’s obstructive security architecture extends into the new Vista Game Explorer and parental control system. The Vista Game Explorer is a top level Start Menu link to a new specialized folder in Vista specifically designed for managing games. It is intended to be the analog to the My Pictures and My Music folders found in Windows XP. Instead of being a link to a standard folder that happens to contain games, Microsoft “added some value” to the Game Explorer by binding it to a new parental control system in Vista.

The problem starts with installing your game and Vista and registering it with the Game Explorer. Unlike the parental control system, the Game Explorer is extremely prominent to consumers who are likely to expect to find the games they install in Vista listed there after installation. Microsoft has supplied compatibility listings for legacy games which will automatically recognize and register them with the Game Explorer when they are installed.

One of the pieces of information a game has to supply to register with Game Explorer is a ESRB rating. Games that do not supply a rating will be subject to the “Not Rated” parental control setting. Since games are “trusted” to supply accurate ratings information, one might expect that they are also trusted to handle parental messaging themselves. Not so, any game that registers with Game Explorer becomes “subject” to Vista parental controls which will proceed to block the game from running and offer to delete the link to the game if you try to run it from anywhere on the system other than within the Game Explorer."

Just turn off the user account protection that is normally enabled and everything works like it should.
(Instead of each program asking about admin access and similar when you start them)

i know i will... hopefully there will be loads of tutorials and info about how to make it more safe for users without M$ spy looking @ your every move.

.... and thats why all the non gamers and smart people use open source op sys like linux... its not fucking spying on you... Sad

yeah i was gonna say... theres always options to disable virtually everything... and then theres patches and edits to disable everything else Very Happy the article only talks about casual users who dont really bother with tweaking their OS... which, lets face it, is probably about 99% of users, which is why online media providers would understandably be worries...

and yeah, i REALLY do not want to update to vista, but its somewhat unavoidable given that ms has made dx10 vista only... ill just sit back and see if someone somehow manages to find a way to get it going on xp, or wait till there are methods to avoid ms spying on me...

its easier to tweak windows vista to the level of windows xp... sooner or later you have to upgrade to windows vista because it always has been like that. M$ made that useless crap and now they have to sell it... even when windows xp is still quite good (as good as windows gets Razz)

so gamers who use DirectX are fucked... other users should use linux. I would if someone found a way to make DX work on linux Sad

I for one am not going to upgrade until i'm forced to do so (xp no longer supported).I really have no use for all the bloat and junk included in Vista. The only argument in favor of Vista is DX10 but i don't really care about in since i'm planning to buy a PS3 somewhere in 2007.I'm kinda sick of all the upgrading cycles required to game on PC and i decided to take the console route until things stabilize in the PC world.

WinXP is currently doing everything i need it to do and that without being a ressource hog and without being too restrictive (DRM junk).Screw Vista and all the BS that comes with it.

I doubt that you're going to be able to disable the DRM junk.Maybe a 3rd party hack is going to do it though (let's hope).

I really don't like vista as being my main os but 3 thing I enjoy very much in Vista is how handle dual core, and GUI(not aero is ugly for me. I mean how feel is smoother than xp ) and network protocol and DX10(gaming of course lol )l.. Vista waste of time and money/download lol. but someone of you have said we going to be force to upgrade sometime in the near future.

What is this thread doing in PC Gaming?

Anyway.. I run Vista x64 flawlessly with a core2duo system. Pretty much all drivers compatibles so I don't have strange behaviors. I had to disable a few things that I didn't like about it like UAC, system restore and automatic indexation but keep in mind these things might be good for other type of users and it's no matter to whine about. About the Vista Game Explorer, I like it really, give you a fast way to see games installed on a computer, quick peek at the box and type of game and requirements without running it. It detected most of the game I installed, which I think it's pretty cool. Are you afraid your daddy and mommy will set a password on your games because they see a M (mature) icon?
