I was so tempted to post this in the bitching section since it is making me bitch!

I got this D-Link DSL604T wireless ADSL router and Ive had nothing but problems with the damn thing. Every so often, usually at least once a day, the connection drops and I get server not found when trying to browse webpages! The only way I can fix it is by pulling the plug on the thing and reconnecting it, at which point it starts working straight away for half a day or so! I am using the latest firmware as far as I know but I dont have my ISP dns servers stored in the router. When I do I am unable to browse at all!

Anyone got any ideas or even have this router themselves!? Its drviing me mad!

I have a US Robotics router (USR8054)... does almost the same thing, only less frequently (maybe once a week). It just gives me the 'you are connected, but with limited connectivity' (ie no internet) message ... Neutral

The only solution I found is to push the damn reset button.

Call your ISP and ask what your SNR is. Tell them the linie has bad flow or something. It might the SNR or the training-mode.

I called up my ISP and they say they can see the router is dropping the connection. They say the line is too fast for the router or something. That sort of makes sense. With my previous ISP only 2 months ago I was on 8mb adsl but due to the distance from the local telephone exchange I was only able to connect at around 4.5mb. My D-Link config shows the downstream rate of 6.21mb! I cant possibly get that with my adsl! My ISP has transferred my problem over to BT who will do something so it is not as fast! They say it will take 2-3 days so I shall have to wait and see!

BT?

But that thing is deffo a SNR problem... The reason the router says 6.whateverMb/s and you cant download with that speed is SNR is to low, and like you say it might be to far distance to the ISP-hookup point. The just need to lower the speed or try another trainingmode, then it will stop disconnecting randomly.

British Telecom. The company who provide the UK's telephonal communications service. My ISP has requested they lower the speed as you say. You seem to know your stuff!

Im not certain this will resolve the issue. I spent most of the other day browsing forums for the D-Link 604T wireless adsl router and a lot of people seem to have a similar problem so I guess the issue could be the hardware itself.

Ahhh I Think I know now, your ISP dosnt have a dslam on the central that your hooked up to, thats why they cant change the speed instantly... So they use BT, and in that case I would guess that BT owns all adsl cobber in UK?

Its the EXACT same thing here were I am, and btw I work @ an ISP as a dsl supporter Smile

We can only change the speed(and other stuff) instantly if we have a dslam at the central, witch is far from everywhere.

Oh and btw, ISP´s do now this Smile They just hope that you wont notice, and still pay for a sucky sucky line, witch like your line dont even get the speed your paying for Razz

A dslam? BT does indeed own all of the adsl cobber as you put it! lol

My line isnt sucky! Its just where I live and short of moving house there is nothing I can do about it! Its still twice as fast as the 2mb connection I used to have!

They rang me today to confirm BT had made alterations to the line and now the router says DSL 5696 Kbps Downstream which is slightly less than what it used to be connected at so they did something! It hasnt gone off since I had the phone call so only time will tell if the issue has been resolved or not!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dslam

Well what I mean is that some ISP order like you say 8mbit adsl at BT ie... BT then delivers what the line can handle(and in some cases, like your line; jumps on and off); but the costumer never gets the "full" 8mbit, and most people dont really notice, they just use it for email+for the kids.

So they kinde pay for something they dont get... Thats why I say sucky Smile

Besides you should upgrade to adsl2+ as soon as possible, Your line SHOULD be able to handle more that 5-6 mbit with adsl2+

Btw I hope it works better now Smile

@nouseforaname

You should try changing the wireless channel in the router/switch/box...I might work, if others have wireless boxes around in a close proximity.

good suggestion ... when I detect wireless networks, I find like 10, so that could very well be it Smile

They might not have changed it yet, as your write the speed is 5696 Kbps... That for me atleast seems like a very odd number to put up. Some training-modes(the adsl protocol) down-grades the speed automaticly, so they might not have changed it yet.

Most isp only change to speeds as 2048, 4096, 8064 and so on.

You should try login into the router and se what the up and down-stream SNR is, if you have any trouble just give me PM, Ill gladly help.

I just checked my router connection speed and it now says 448 Kbps Upstream, 5408 Kbps Downstream and 18 hours connected! I think it might now be fixed! Ive usually had to restart it at least once by now! Thanks for your help Photish. I will keep you updated if the connection drops again.
