Some of these games are surprisingly deep, even on older consoles like SNES or even NES.
(Secret of Mana, supposedly has a different name in the original Japanese version, Chrono Trigger, Ye Olde Final Fantasy Games and Bahamut Lagoon to name a few that I remember.)
Currently going trough a few other freeware titles that I got from various sites like Laxius and despite it initially appearing simple it's quite challenging.
(Although for that game spamming random encounters every five steps or so and every two steps or so in dungeons works wonders when the enemy casts *Death* and many other wonderous deadly spells of instant "Fuck you and die player" characteristic., kinda feels like extreme versions of oldies like Wizardry, Ultima or Might & Magic actually, hahaha.)
(That description might have been a bit extreme but in terms of titles like Knights of Xentar it's quite fitting, that one is basically a early crude "H-Game" though, you even start naked and it's dungeon rape instead of dungeon raid as carried on by several other titles like Castle Fantasia, Tears of Tiara or Kingdom or oldies like Raidy for "PC98" whatever that was - later remade for modern computers even, haha.)

Hmm...this is at least the third remake of Ys I and II on PC. I'm dying to play VII in English.
Correcting people since 2007 even if they're not wrong.

It's up on Steam now, or something like that.
(So I guess it'll be available elsewhere shortly.)

EDIT: What the hell is with that achievement image?

This is just the 2005 Win JP release translated and cheevos§!!11 added. Sadly it's not the enhanced PSP version, but oh well... this is PC gaming, should hardly expect any kind of effort to be put into games these days.
Spoiler: |
Yes I'm annoyed. Two years ago we were playing it just the way it was, now we're being asked to pay for it all over again. The very LEAST XSeed could have done was port the enhanced/improved PSP version.
|
@JB
That's because this is just the 2005 release, which had some pretty gruesome visual issues - worse on modern cards.

I was under the impression they started with this and planned to do more, of course if they do a older game from the start and one which likely already has a fan translation (Or from what you say a superior version on a different - emulator possible? - platform.) they might not get the support they expected for obvious reasons.
EDIT: Yeah they're just starting with this, wonder how the other titles will be then.
http://www.shacknews.com/article/72860/xseed-starts-steam-releases-with-ys-series
(I mean I don't own much in terms of console hardware but I remember the name from somewhere.)
(EDIT: Also, again, the achievement images are hilarious - http://steamcommunity.com/stats/207320/achievements )
(EDIT: People already have some of those end-game achievements? that was quick.)
(Or maybe not http://blog.gib.me/2012/03/19/steam-achievement-manager-games-update-190/ )
(Yeah it's pretty short apparently if there's a achievement for completing it in five hours.)

Is this game similar to Bastion gameplay-wise? If so, would I like it considering my love for Bastion? I don't really like the anime style in general though.

Well, I've seen some gameplay and it looks similar. That's why I asked that.

Well if you like the Ys games (or Jarpgs like Secret of Mana usw in general) then its definitely worth checking out if you didnt play it so far its a great little game, Ys Origin is even better chronologicall its set bevore the first game so its a great start if you didnt play any of the other Ys games.

Eh? It's not set before the first one, Oath in Felghana is a remake of Ys III ... which is chronologically set after the events of Ys I and Ys II.

Ah.. yeah, I'm waiting for that one too, XSeed said they'll release it "later in the year" - though it, too, is just a translation of the 2006 WinJ release. Oh well, despite my griping - I AM very happy to finally start getting these games released.

There's either DX8 or DX10+ support since the exe and launcher exists in both config.exe and config_dx9.exe
(EDIT: DX8 or DDRAW and DX9)
Config program also is a bit disturbing since it brings up this little pop-up of a girl whom can be interacted with by right clicking on her, otherwise there's a number of possible adjustments.
Have yet to play the actual game though but things seems OK so far.
EDIT: Oh each of the eight movement directions has it's own button, that's new.
(WSADQEZX or NUM1 to NUM9 on the default config, there's two presets.)

I've just been trying it and I'm amazed that the old visual issues the 2005/fantrans used to have are now gone. No more distortion and text corruption, as well as no more strange texture/polygon flicker. Great stuff! As far as I know, it's the same fan translation used on the PSP version that was licensed from the translators. Hmm, I guess for £10 this is definitely worth picking up.

Not trying to bash the game, Secret of Mana deep?... It was very simplistic but fun, it worked.
Hell, it was my first jrpg, I even built a website for it.

I might remember incorrectly or even using the wrong name, I think It was one of the earliest games I played (Began with NES but it was nearly outdated already, then Snes and now PC.) so I might be quite off, I'll have to re-play all of these some day.
(I should check that out better.)
Some friends had DOS or early Windows 3.1 (And later on W95) with games on now that I think about it, mostly action games or strategy however.
Anyway I've started playing this now, got trough the first areas without any problems at all only to meet the first mini boss or what it might have been and dying spectacularly, rushing a shield protected magic user wasn't really a good idea.
(Got in a number of hits however so if I had some better health or healing at all I would probably have taken him down pretty soon afterwards, starting out with 50 gold means you can't really do much to prepare and items found seem to be instantly used other than gold and that ore you use for upgrades, all the good items seem to be done by madmen too, odd that.)

Aspect Ratio Fix
To do this open up the ysf_win_dx9.exe in a hexeditor. Search for AB AA AA 3F and replace it with 39 8E E3 3F (16:9), or CD CC CC 3F which is (16:10).
