Hi guys!!
Im thinking about buying an xbox360 next month and i wanted to ask you some nooby questions to make the right purchase.
1.Is there any critical reason for me to buy premium over the core package?
2.what medias manufactures are the best for burning xbox360 games?
3.is there a way for me to check if my dvd burner is compactable with dvd9?
4.what mod chips/flashing hacks are available right now and what are the differences between them?
5.should i buy a pre-hacked console or do it at home (i prefer not to spend too much money and im pretty good with flashing/hardware)
6.anything else you can tell me before i buy it.
thx in advance!

core is worthless. always get the premium, you need the hard disk, the wirless controller
2.what medias manufactures are the best for burning xbox360 games?
verbatim DVD_R DL are the best
3.is there a way for me to check if my dvd burner is compactable with dvd9?
get a Pioneer 111D
4.what mod chips/flashing hacks are available right now and what are the differences between them?
depending on whether ur drive is hitachi or samsung there are 2 different firmware flashing methods.
5.should i buy a pre-hacked console or do it at home (i prefer not to spend too much money and im pretty good with flashing/hardware)
do it urself, its way too easy, even a caveman can do it!!
6.anything else you can tell me before i buy it.
search google, xbox-scene.com before asking such questions in future.
thx in advance! |

1. Yes its better value, and if you're planning on using the xbox live service its a must
2. Virbatim, ridata and fuji are brands that have a good success rate but its down to people and their preference other people have had success with different media
3. the front ofyour burner should have the DVD+R DL logo somewhere on it or refer to the brands website. Or buy a pioneer 111D or an NEC 3550A
4. Depends on the Drive. They all play backups but the hitatchi firmware doesnt have media stealth (i beleive this is still so) and the samsung firmware has been modified to play xbox1 single layer backups as well. It has a feature to play xbox360 games from single layer but there arent many games that would fit on a single layer disk
5. Do it yourself if you follow the instructions correctly and MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR DRIVE KEY STORED SAFE BEFFORE FLASHING. You cant really mess it up
6. again make sure you have a backup of your drive key before flashing it, its incredible how many people have flashed over their firmware without checking the key first and bricked their console it makes the whole process take 5 more mins depending on the drive and IF u do something wrong it can help solve a lot of heartache

If you aren't planning on going on Xbox Live, I wouldn't bother with the hard drive, as the memory unit is enough to let you be able to save games. Though the Core package doesn't come with a memory unit, so be prepared to spend another £20 to buy a memory unit (the hard drive costs about £70).

Verbatim and Traxdata, Verbatim however are the best you can get.

I assume you mean if you can burn dual layer, then I'd google your make and model number of your burner and make sure that it can burn DVD+R DL discs. Lots of people tend to buy the Pioneer 111D drive as it's "popular", although I have a Samsung SH-S182D and haven't ever had 1 problem with it, although it's mostly media compatability, some drives can burn certain media and work flawlessly and some drives fail to be able to burn that media properly. Pot luck.
Quote: | 4.what mod chips/flashing hacks are available right now and what are the differences between them? |
There are a number of different hacked firmwares available, they are for the different DVD drives that come with an Xbox 360. Generally, the older the Xbox 360 is the easier it will be to flash it. Also, the Samsung TS-H943 is arguably the best supported firmware wise (although the Hitachi drives have decent firmware), so if you can you might wanna consider trying to get a second hand Xbox 360 with the Samsung drive. You can "kinda" check the drive type by looking at the try, see > this image < for an example (the left one is a Phillips drive, these were mostly used for developer Xbox's, the middle one is the Hitachi drive and the right one is the Samsung drive).

I'd just do it yourself, although you need a compatible SATA chipset on your motherboard or PCI card to be able to flash the drive properly, some models and makes are not supported and cannot be used to flash the drive (for an example I have an ICH8 chipset on my main computer, and a ICH5 chipset on my secondary computer. The ICH8 works flawlessly with any, but a recent v0059DJ Xbox 360 that I got wouldn't flash with the ICH5, although v0047 would). If you are also not "familiar" with flashing firmwares you might want to consider getting someone else to do it for you, or buying one pre-flashed.

HD televisions are best to get a full experience from an Xbox 360, or alternatively you can use a PC monitor with a VGA cable, although make sure you buy an OFFICIAL Microsoft VGA cable if you take that option as non official ones generally tend to have ghosting on the screen due to poor quality / build. If you're planning on using Xbox Live, be prepared to get to the point where flashed Xbox 360's are detected and banned from Xbox Live, so if you are wanting Xbox Live then I wouldn't flash your drive. You can use a flashed system on Xbox Live perfectly fine at the moment, but I'd doubt it'll always stay that way.

Most people will tell you to get a Premium package but it really depends on what you have and what you want to do. I bought a flashed Core console with a Memory Unit and the VGA cable for less than the price of a Premium package. For me this was a much better deal because I don't need all the crap from the Premium package - since I don't have a HDTV I don't need a component cable, I don't need a headset, I don't want a wireless controller (because you can't use it on the PC and you have to charge it) and the HDD is not required as long as you don't want to play Xbox 1 games. Also you can probably get a bigger HDD for a smaller price in a few months or next year.

Some games?
The HDD is very important, consider it as important as it is on your PC.

No, as long as the 360 games work without the HDD it's definitely NOT "very important". I don't miss it at all. Loading times are fast enough, I'm used to much longer loading times from the PC. You can get game patches with a Memory Unit so if you don't feel the need to download demos/trailers/DLC from Live and you don't want to play Xbox 1 games you don't need the HDD.

What does it matter anyway, this has turned into another "crap I already have <w/e version> now I have to justify it"
Just like PC versus Console arguments, you're arguing with yourself.
