Hmm yeah looks really nice!
But I think I'm gonna have to get a new system for that game... Looks almost as system consuming as Crysis!

Well, I used to love nethack/moria/omega/ADOM etc. I took a look at Dwarf Fortress and realised I no longer have the patience for a game with graphics and a user interface that would have made even the Victorians weep.

I cant bring myself to spend a lot of time playing ASCII rogue games on my comp, however since learning of T.O.M.E on the PSP I've been addicted to it for awhile, its like ADOM but 100 times larger.

I tried this game but its so confusing looking and it looks like I would have to seriously research the game before I would be able to play it correctly and thats just a big not gonna happen for me.

In fact it is. I compare playing this game to reading a book. It's just symbols, but if you understand them, and if you can imagine that yes, this square of 9 ASCII symbols IS a forge.

You have to use your imagination to really see things, which is not easy for dumb people.

Anyway, this game is much more fun than any game around, actually. You have such a liberty and you can do such a variety of things, and just with an ASCII gfx system.
Truely amazing!

In fact it's the case. The algorythm of the game is so complex and the game itself is so rich that a top notch CPU is required. When you have a huge fortress and about 150 dwarves messing around, it's starting to get "laggy".
So NO, you're not going to need some quadri SLI 8800GTS, but a solid CPU instead Wink

Ahh... so THAT's the REAL reason why they had to remove the vehicles from S.T.A.L.K.E.R!
Too many dwarfs toddling around on their stubby little legs. And they said the vehicles interfered with A-Life... Bah!

As a gamer for the last 26 years, I can appreciate this type of game.

Looks cool. I wish though, that some game companies would take a concept like this and make it modern. I don't think game developers "get it" any more.
Sigh.
There hasn't been anything worth a piss released in quite while imo.

Ahh yes. The original RTS. Man. I bought my first PC for that game.

Prior to that, I was an Amiga/commodore fan. . . Amiga. . . still the best dambned computer EVER.

My first upgrade for my PC was so I could play Privateer. What a game that was as well.

You are too correct. There is absolutely NO innovation these days. I get bored with everything because everything feels the same. It just has different looks.
Sux.

I started gaming on a Commodore Plus/4 with Summer Games - That killed many microswitch-based joystick.
Then i settled for a C64 - many classics there.

PCs started for me with Wing Commander Wink I loved that series - including Privateer.

In this game, the ressources are spent on the AI and not on the graphics.
With modern gfx, this game could not run properly without disabling a lot of features.

As I said, despite the ugly gfx, the game needs a lot of RAM and CPU once you've got a lot of dwarves.
If you're a "real" gamer, go ahead and try it, you will be stunned by the fun it procures.
Just start with this : http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Page
This wiki explain a lot of basic features, so you don't get too confused Wink

For those who try it, HAVE FUN! Smile

Definitely a fun game. And yeah, I see what you mean. No way I could see them doing a game like this with 3d graphics and such... possibly pretty 2d sprites and the sort though... which would still rock. BUT, it's a good game despite that. I'm glad I can enjoy games like this.

PostPosted: Tue, 6th Feb 2007 18:51    Post subject: tileset graphics...
If anyone hasn't tried the tileset graphics addon for Dwarf fortress, you really should.
Makes your dwarves look like dwarves, the creatures look like creatures. Unfortunately, no grpahics for the trees and such. . . yet. just the creatures. But, it makes it a lot easier being able to tell what is what on the screen without simple ascii symbols.
Heres the link to them:

http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Object_Tilesets

If this game was converted to just a simple 2d graphics engine. . . it would really kick much ass. Man it is detailed as all get out. If you can get past the graphics... theres a LOT going on in this game. I really think it's cool how if you abandon your fortress, it will become populated by monsters and you can find it in adventure mode.
