I've got two WAN links. I don't want to buy a dual WAN router because the DSL only has a 2gb a month limit and I want to use it for web-browsing. Was wondering if there's anyway to force an application to use a certain network interface. So if I have two WAN links coming in, tell a proxy server to use the 2gb and everything else to use my main 20mbit cable.
Is this possible? At the moment it's whatever one that is connected first is used for the internet.

Hm, I don't think this is possible. Maybe with external hardware (the one you don't want), but I don't think software can do this, unless it's on driver level, which would be limiting the configuration options.

You should build a Linux firewall or get one of the pre-created Linux firewall distros like m0n0wall (http://m0n0.ch/wall/).. That will probably do the job, but you may have to create your own routing tables.
e.g. (in pseudo)
if outgoing port 80 --> eth0
if outgoing port 1337 --> eth1
if incoming --> eth3
Obviously you will need a spare machine with 3 or more Ethernet ports on it.
You could potentially do the same thing with any half decent router so long as you can directly access and modify the routing tables. You would need to make sure you had 2 devices that could take the external IP addresses, then hook them up as internal devices to the router. Then pass connections onto each depending on port.

Why would you want to use 2gb capped connection anyway? Capped connections sound so dumb to me...

I feared i'd have to build up a Linux router, the main thing holding me back is the electricity wastage (yah I'm a hippy). I have the DD-WRT firmware on my router, sYn anychance of you explaning how to do what you're describing in that?
The 2gb capped connection is great for web surfing. Cause when I'm uploading on my 20mbit it kills the download speed. So I want to be able to upload at 100% while not effecting browsing. Otherwise I'd ahve to limit my upload speed to 70% of max.
Edit: that monowall looks awesome! Gonna build a low power comp when I get some cash. Cheers sYn

That thing will run on almost anything! Just stick it in a really old (and thus lower powered) machine.. Should do the job for you, and if you ask on the forums they will no doubt give you all the information you need.
I would suggest you go ask on the forums before building a machine to make sure its possible!
