This is pretty unbelievable but true story, happened today. I dunno if any of you guys know but I had sold my gaming rig to buy a new tranny for my WRX.

So it's been a couple weeks since the transmission was installed and I opted for a STi 6 speed rather then the stock 5 speed from the WRX. Well everything was perfect except maybe the fact that my PC was gone.

I was really too lazy to do an oil change plus all the jacks were at my bros house. I decided might as well take it to where our family gets all their oil changes at (EZ Lube)

I head over there and let them change the oil and chit chat with some of the dudes about cars while they do the work, took maybe 10 mins + plus they vacuum wash your windows etc.

Now I pull out and drive maybe 4 minutes down the road I hear someone behind me honking hysterically for like 10 seconds at me. I look in my rearview mirror and I'm like what the hell is this guys problem. I keep driving a bit more and he and someone else are now honking at me so now I know something is wrong. Well all of a sudden I smell something burning and I see plumes of smoke behind my car which is what they were trying to tell me about.

So at this point I'm like WTF! Within seconds my hood erupts in smoke and it's pouring inside the drivers cabin, I am in such a state of shock and disorientation I'm not thinking straight at all. So I pull the car over to the side and push the brakes but no brakes! The car is now rolling with me in it at about 40Mph shooting smoke all over and my brakes are gone!

I'm starting to panic now and know that I HAVE to get out of the damn car so I do the first thing I can think of which is open the door and roll out of that bitch but after I open the door and see the road below me flying by I'm like nah. So I basically destroy my new transmission by downshifting abruptly to try and apply some engine breaking to slow the car a bit, enough for me to get out. I swing the door open and throw myself out and the car rolls into a curb and comes to a stop.

The cars now on Fire and like 20 people are slowly driving by watching me tumble on the floor while they pass a burning car (damn Americans) About 4-5 people stop and pull over they call 911 and a firetruck is there in minutes. Too late for my car though because about half the interior was crispy as well as the entire front end.

I didn't even care about the condition I was in or the car the only thing on my mind was sprinting back to that damn oil change place and breaking someones face, I almost took the keys out of this guys hands to steal his car and drive back there. I was so furious.

An ambulance came and I didn't let them touch me the only thing on my mind was causing those dudes some pain. A ton of the bystanders asked me what the hell that was about and they over heard me telling the cops that the idiots there must have either spilled oil or left something open/loose causing it to ignite. The cops told me if we were you we'd wanna go rain some hurt too but your better off letting your insurance handle it with them.

So here I am pissed off that my car is done and unsure of what will happen in terms of me being reimbursed and I'm still trying to collect myself. This shit is so ridiculous.

Damn! Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad

Glad you didn't get hurt.

I wouldn't call the people responsible either, they will just fight it more and you might get less money maybe.

I dont trust any mainstream places like that, they hire people with NO experience once so ever. Some jackass at lube probes bumped some buttons in my aunts cars causing some lights she didnt see in the day time to turn on and when she parked her car and went inside her home it killed the battery. So they made the manager of the store drive out to her place and fix the problem. You got a lawsuite and it won't be the first. Shut that place down!

Flippen eck! that is bloody scarey Sad

At least you have plenty of witnesses who may have seen you just leaving the garage, also I assume the garage will have CTTV which they will have to hand over to the insurance.. anyway at least you were not toasted and all you lost was a car - could have been a lot worse

I know it's lame but I lol'd.

Seriously though it's pretty sharp of you to get out of the car while it was on fire. You are going to need a good lawyer now since the garage is probably not going to accept liability. Best of luck man.

It's a 2004 WRX, I paid about $17,000 for it, it was dyno'ing about 240'ish WHP. I really don't know what's going on right now because my insurance company told me they might not be able to do anything about this.

They told me that EZ Lube may not be liable. The police officer on the scene took pictures of the whole thing with his digital camera and exchanged info with me for when I needed the pics. I also got the information of the 2 honking at me non-stop since they were the first to see trouble.

They are gonna call me later after contacting the oil places higher ups.

Squirrely: Now come on y'all. We can't waste time arguing. There could still be survivors out there. We need to hunt them down, and kill them.
Beary: How about we kill them, and then rape their bodies so we can use their blood as lubricant.

Insurance companies are lame as hell eh? They always want money and never want to pony up any dough, such assholes.

I hope you get to pull a nice big chunk out of them.

Actually you would be surprised at the number of people whose cars catch fire/fall in a ditch and end up burnt alive/drowned with onlookers doing what they do best - looking on. Most people (including myself I think) end up just freezing in a panic situations. Sad

You can argue that the people who died in their cars couldn't get the door open because of the accident. Most cars have more than one door but the sad truth is that victims in such situations don't even get their seat-belts off. And there is no simulator for such kind of situations whereby you can predict how you would react in a similar situation.

In the US do you have to Declaire modifications on your insurance?? if so I hope you did or they will void it and you wont get anything Sad... In the UK you have to declair all modifications (Even different Airfilters, differetn steering wheel, differetn Dump Valve / Blow off vavle etc) as they can use this as a way of getting out from paying you.

No we don't, I've never heard of declaring modification before so my guess is that's not implemented here.

As of right now my Insurance is giving me the go round. I really don't know what course of action to take right now. They call me periodically telling me they've contacted the EZ Lube corporate or whatever but no info.

some insurance companies do, they want you too cause anything not OEM could be the cause of whatever fire or whatever and won't be covered under the insurance
