Nice read
This is the really important stuff - LHC, space exploration, deep sea, dark matter etc.
But governments rather like to spend their billions on WMDs and wars.
If NASA had the money it deserves, we would already be living on the moon and travelling to Mars. But we are still stuck in the 70's.
People never get it - if I could I would force em all to start being interested in SPACE.
Its our future, goddamnit!

Why do we need to spend billions on living on the moon?

For the further exploration of space?
We need to build telescopes out there to take a deeper look into the universe and discover new galaxies and planets we can't see from earth.
There are hardly any experiments done in this environment (low gravity, vacuum). If we had the means e.g. bigger and more advanced space stations or research facilities on the moon this would give us many new results and a better understanding of the universe. It could also prove helpful for finding an efficient way to travel through space.
And hey wouldn't it be cool to be on the moon? Experience this feeling, seeing this little blue ball on the horizon - Home.
In the end these are all little steps to lead us to one final goal - colonization of space.
It is the next logical step and the only way for humanity to survive in the long term.
We already have ion drive prototypes and new better shuttle designs but are still flying around with 40 yr. old crapshuttles just because there is not enough money to build new ones. We have the technology - but not the means. I'm generally interested in space since I'm 4 and I want to see results here in my lifespan. That there will be a delay just because some rich fat fucks like Cheney want to spend more money on weapons pisses me off.

well, I quote T2 "It's in out nature to destory ourselves" with that being said were slowly ruining this planet, the ozone, ice caps melting, polution, pretty soon were not going to have the trees to produce oxygen and were going to have machines doing it, lakes, rivers, oceans will become toxic, so in turn, we move to another planet and fuck that up too......makes me want to play red faction lol.

I think they got it wrong.
"It's in our nature to destroy ourselves, and everything else with it".

We will, inevitably, see results in our lifetime. Barring a nuclear war (and another dark age which may result,) technology now is progressing at a parabollic rate - what used to take thousands of years to develop now takes ten years, and it isn't slowing down.
The negative effect of this is, if it took us so many years to fuck up this planet (less than 100 since the start of the industrial revolution?) with nuclear tech, Earth 2.0 may be done in 20. I'm afraid that we may well prove to be a parasite, unless people drastically change their mind about how much they need conspicuous consumption etc, and the people in power pull their heads out of their asses.
Sorry for the essay, anyway.
