Since Peter Moore said there won't be a new Xbox console until 2011 or 2012 I'm sure we will see many more improvements. The programmers always find new ways to get more out of the hardware and the SDKs get better.

My opinion is theres still loads left in the xbox360,I cant wait for unreal tournamemt 3,By xmas 2008 you will see games pushing the xbox360 to the MAX or there abouts, even though you will see more inovative games through out the xbox360 life although by I think by 2010 xbox360 & PS3 games are going to look pretty paltry compared to what a top spec PC can do by then, even by the end of this year when games like crysis are released on the PC will probably look better than what most of the games on xbox360 & PS3 is throwing out at the end of thier life,

Look at all the games with really bad graphics. It's not like they've suddenly solved the problem of how to maximise a systems potential.

Also, just because the poly counts will level off to a degree, how they get used has infinite possibilities. I think Gears is up there for looks with a lot of CG FMV, and in those the only restraints are the artists imagination.

There is so much more even the most talented devs can do (Rare, Epic). Take Parallax Mapping for instance (the 3D bricks in Kameo castle maps and some rare and select maps in Gears), almost nobody uses it and its almost free for the GPU and blows away every other 3d-texturing effect.

And another thing almost nobody uses is the FREE FSAA offered by the 10MB edram. I'd guess 85% of games out there have no AA at all. Here a game like Viva Pinata shines with its native 720p, superior graphics and FSAA to top it off.

This is complicated further by the multicore design of the CPU and industry-first uniform shader architecture of the GPU.

Just take a look at a game like COD3. There is a studio (Treyarch) that can throw 50 bumpmapped characters on screen at 60fps no problems, then there are studios that cannot put a SINGLE character on screen without stuttering and slowdown.

The market is saturated by studios who compete at who can take your money with the least effort. Then there are the rare and few big money studios that are still competing in who can make maximizing visual performance an art in itself.

Think it's interesting how things are developing, as projects become larger and more complex, more companies will license 3rd party tools like the Unreal Engine to a greater degree. Much more efficient.

I think there is one definitive reply to this thread, and this is my attempt at it.

No.

The slightly longer answer? Well, may I remind you of last years epic "Black" release on the Xbox. That was by all means the most impressive looking and feeling game on the Xbox - and it came right at the end of the xbox's life. It just goes to show that as optimisations are found, and the power of the 360 is greater exploited, we are undoubtably in for alot more eye candy yet.

Applauds Horrordee.

i was about to say the same thing , Black was by far the best looking xbox1 game and right at the end of the xbox's life, so we can expect a lot better then current 360 titles in years to come judging by Black

Heres a good example, or anaolgy

Ok, first think of the X360, or other consoles as a box.

Think of code as paper.

Now presently gears of war may have filled the box (Highly doubt it, but for examples sake)

But since we are very premature in the learning curve for this machine. All the code is like crumpled balls of paper, put into the box.

Then 2nd gen games are developed. This time say 1/3 of the code is way more efficent, so using the paper analogy, you could say that 1/3 of the box is now full of perfectly layed down sheets, then filled will balled up paper.

As we progress further and further in the life of a console, the box get filled with more and more perfectly layed down paper. Hence Black, like a previous poster said.

Current gen games and 2nd,3rd or even final gen games will generally tax a systems resources quite closely. Hence why some say lack luster PS2 games may have had slowdown, but other graphically stunning AAA titles never hitch.

Expect to see much, much more from each console, well except (And dont get all fantarded on me for this) for maybe the wii, since it is slow closely linked to the cudes Hardware, the efficency may allready be tapped. But developers are a creative bunch, and tend to change techniques to better utilize system power.

Horrordee's example was a good example. Yours explained the same thing but was longer and used a weird analogy Razz
