Infinity: The quest for Earth

  • Official web page: Infinity: The quest for Earth Official Website
  • Publisher: N/A
  • Developer: Some guys
  • Media type and size: N/A
  • Genre: MMO/SpaceSim
  • Release date: 2008
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

Mankind eventually mastered interstellar travel and colonized thousands of planetary systems, bringing a new Era of prosperity lasting centuries. Today, this age of light is coming to an end. Recently, a strange disease has appeared and spread like wildfire, keeping women from becoming pregnant. The population is condemned to age and die out in but a few decades if no solution is found. Fortunately, scientists have come across some references to a cure, which would naturally be abundant on the mysterious planet of Origins, where it is believed that life appeared for the first time... Unfortunately, the exact location of this planet has been lost throughout the generations.

Now, the only glimmer of hope lies in the hands of a small group of fearless adventurers relentlessly exploring the galaxy, trying to discover the location of this mythical world forgotten by all.. a small blue planet better known as Earth.

  • Features:
    Quote:
Open ended gameplay: unlike many other games, Infinity does not force you to play in any specific way. The game is race-less, class-less and skill-less. You can play as a merchant, trade, mine asteroids or minerals on planets, explore the galaxy, do scientific research, create your own industrial corporation.. or, if you are more into action, play as a space pirate.. at your own risk.

Real-time fighting: most MMORPGs today use a turn-based approach to combat. In Infinity, you are directly controling your spaceship movements and lasers. Your own skills and dexterity will make the difference, not a bunch of stats on your character!

Persistent universe: infinity is a massively, multiplayer online game. The universe is persistent. When you are not playing online, the game does not stop. Other players continue to play, the universe evolves, and new things are always happening.

Procedural universe: procedural programming is a technique to let the computer generate the game universe on-the-fly, in real-time on request, rather than manually building everything. Because of this, the generated universe can be absolutely huge. In Infinity, billions of worlds, most of them never explored by any player, are awaiting the adventurous soul.

Seamless engine: Infinity's engine features a completely seamless experience. You can fly in space and land on planets.. without any loading times or unnatural transitions.

Planet landing: you are not restricted as to where you can land. Explore every square centimeter of your home planet! On planets you can see the flora and fauna, find oceans, hills, mountains, cities, and a lot of other details.

Unique quests: Infinity offers a wide range of missions available in space stations or cities. But sometimes you might want to try something more challenging. Discover the storyline's quests. Unlike missions, quests follow a real story, and can only be accomplished by one player (or a group of players). Once the quest is done, it disappears forever from the game and is no longer available to other players. Be the first to complete a quest, and you'll get fame, money... and much more.

Newtonian physics: rigid body physics are used to simulate the game objects. However, the newtonian space flight will be controlled by a computer, which will simplify the navigation. The amount of inertia is automatically adjusted. It will be very easy to travel in space, land on a planet, or dock to a station in manual mode.

Astrophysics: Unlike most other games, Infinity respects the relative scales and distances one could find in space. Realistic orbits are used, and planets move in real-time. Many systems have multiple suns, with a complete hierarchy of celestial bodies orbiting around each other. You will find moons and asteroids in orbit of larger planets, themselves orbiting the sun(s).

  • Multiplayer: YES
  • System requirements:
    Quote:

    Minimum system requirements
These minimum requirements are only estimated and will probably change to something
more accurate as the development progresses.

CPU speed: Intel Pentium IV 2 Ghz or AMD Athlon 1500+ or equivalent
    RAM size: 512 MB
Video card: a graphics card supporting pixel shader 2.0 (ATI Radeon 9500+, NVidia Geforce FX+)
Disk space: at least 2 GB
    Internet connection: 56k modem
Operating system: Windows 2000 or later

to bad its an MMORPG.
is it like a one-man team? Everywhere on the site (like the FAQ) it only says "I don't know" "I tried to create.." "I wont be done before" ect.

the only part that indicates that theres more on the crew is the news about someone leaving.

Is this some "homebrew game" without press releases and stuff? becouse I cant find any info about it on game sites.

Most probably vapourware. I've been following this game for a while - although the developer does seem like a genius - in the literal sense. I use singular because most of the work is done by one man, although he recently got some help from people online.

yeah it's a "homemade" with only a few completely unknown guy on the team(which is why i find this game so amazing). oh and btw - it's not a MMORPG ,it's much more like freelancer's multiplayer + this game will have an offline mode AND it will be free!!!

Stunning, absolutely beautiful looking game. The tech is ambitious and it may be some time before we see a release. Could this be the first MMO to squeeze a sub out of me? EVE and STO tried, and I loved both games but this looks a class apart IMO.

All I would love to see is some re-entry heat effects and maybe a little more depth from space to surface. The atmosphere looks a little... shallow. Not moaning at all, I still think it's stunning but still. Smile

this game looks great, and very ambitious...perhaps too ambitious if you ask me.
projects like this that look too good to be true often just are too good to be true and either never get released at all, or drop craploads of the planned features that would have made it so awesome to begin with.

still, if this does come out it could be really good. something to look forward to besides jumpgate evolution.

Pre-alpha tech demo?? After FOUR years? This game will never see the light of day. It looks great but I don't anticipate seeing it ever released.

Considering that this game is made by 8 people, not too shabby for 4 years.

Well, the only thing that really sounds great about this is the game/graphics engine itself. *This* is the way to do space sims, and hopefully other developers will pick up on it( Egosoft for instance ), because I'm not so sure this little group of developers can actually make a good game on top of it.

If only you could take this game engine and combine it with Freelancer gameplay and story.
I want a sp space game, not multiplayer.

I like that idea, too. One group/party = one ship. I guess it'd be pretty difficult to pull off and be fun for all involved , though Laughing

It's how I imagined Star Trek Online should have been; instead they decided to give everyone a starship of their own - put me right off!

I think most of Evochron is procedurally generated. I think it was something like a 50mb download.

Try an Unreal Tournament 3 mod called Planetstorm, each person can man a station on a battleship in space to shoot down other ships. There is boarding and such. And of course infantry combat.

The developers are working on making a standalone game using the UDK.

@dodger

Yup I think Evochron is the name of the game.

Just out of cusriosity, I checked a few videos of that game. It was laughable. How can anyone compare the two?

Sure it was planet landing instead of nothing at all like today's norm, but even Elite3 felt more involving than this.
