Well i finally been cought for downloading stuff. Cox sent me a message saying that you gotta stop uploading shit. I guess their problem was that i was uploading it while downloading, and sharing is a nono. So i decided to try usenet since everyone seem to be using it. Now i searched and found a pretty good website explaining what is usenet and some points in using it. To use it i first have to get a news server, i searched and found that cox provides a news server and tried to use it with grabit which seemed to work. Now the download speed was pretty slow (couldnt find my actual download speed, but it was slow, took me about 20 minutes to download 100 mb file), does the speed depend on your news server or your internet connection or both? Also which is a good news server, i dont usually download a lot, i think 20 gigs would be enough, it seems like giganews is the most popular, am i right or are there better servers?
Also why the heck grabit charges for using their search function, what is so special about it, why is it better than say binsearch which appears to be free, are there better alternatives than grabit?. And if i do end up paying for news server, how will it work? Will they provide me with their address that i have to insert into grabit and username + password? Also are newsgroups safer to use than bittorent? i dont want to be cought again.
Thanks for the help, again im a total noob in using usenet with total experience of downloading one file.

Your news server will give you a server address and a login/pass, that you use in your proggy.
Speed is great, much better than torrents, try NZBMatrix for better categorized searching (needs a free login) You can find that stuff yourself on BinSearch if you know what you're looking for.
Oh, also you need QuickPar to validate/correct incomplete downloads etc.
EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention that the number of connections your news server allows you may affect the download speed a lot. Dunno shit about security, sorry.

Thanks.
Can you elaborate on that quickpar and incomplete downloads. I see that every download is broken into many rar files, so lets say i only download 99 out of 100, will quickpar download the remaining one file, or is it something completely different?

public torrent sites suck but the better private ones have dedicated uploaders on 100mb+ connections and they get releases much quicker than there on the newsgroups.
newsgroups are all good though my isp does a pretty decent newsgroup server but some of the better binaries are missing from there list.
best you pay for newsgroup access if thats where your will be downloading the majority of your stuff, the free ones like from isps always have rather poor retention..

Quickpar will use parity (*.par, *.par2) files when they are available along the release to reconstruct the missing or incomplete files. With grabit you don't really need it if you only download coz it has an integrated function that will repair then extract the relevant files.

Yes private trackers like TL maxes out my dl speed, the problem is i have to upload, and cox doesnt like it. Also am i right in assuming giganews is the best news server, or are there better ones?

be lame and cap your upload at 10kb/s and then once the dl finishes stop it and use ratio master to fake upload until you have seeded enough.
your never going to use torrents again anyway so if you get bannned doing it no loss to you, most sites cant tell aslong as you dont be stupid and upload at 5gb/s

Well it wasnt cox's idea. Paramount pictures sent them a letter saying that i downloaded into the wild and they dont like it, so cox better disconnect our internet. We called cox and they have this 3 strikes and you out policy, so i guess i have two more.

Giganews is best but if you want unlimited downloads on a cheaper server try newshosting. They aren't perfect but for the most part it's a great service. Only had a few complaints in 2 years.

haha yeah stupid public trackers, i usually get my stuff from tl, but i get older movies from public since private trackers only have recent stuff. I guess it was a TRAP!!.
Thanks tihkal, i'll look into newshoting, but were the complaints deal breaking or just some minor stuff?

Well the only complaint is they were down twice for 2-10 hours.
Most of the time though it caps my connection at 1240 KB's. I really don't have any complaints, they have less issues then my ISP. No weird billing problems or anything.

newshosting is great but has a shorter retention of files than giganews (80 or 110 days versus 200 days), otherwise contrary to tihkal it allowed me to maximize my 30mb connection.

Well my connection isnt that great. Max download speed is about 800 kb/s so i should more than fine.
Edit: I see that they have max number of connections, is connection a source? Meaning i'll be downloading off 8 sources or are they kind of like seeders in BT? Also retention is the number of days the file will be available for download, right?
Thanks.

Sorry i said that kinda strange --- It caps out my connection which is 10Mb so it's right on par.

You can connect multiple times to the server to make sure you can max out your DL speed since they can't do that in just one connection Buy my max is 800 KB too (5 mbit) so 1-2 always max it out anyways.
I've used newshosting for the last 2-3 years, they even don't seem to notice that I split the 8 connections and 1 username with my bro at a really different IP. But really, there have been several times I wished the retention to be longer... particularly HD movie rips when a specific one you want is only posted once or rarely (not new stuff, but older releases). Games are always reposted over and over, albums are too but weblnks/p2p is really easy for that anyways. But right now I'm not the one making the CC payment (I paid for the first while, we switched) and like I said we can split the cost, so it is really only $7.50/mnth. BTW, I used ISP from like 1997-2005 If you keep on top of things, you can make sure not to miss stuff because of retention. I just got my HDTV in December so I happen to be looking for stuff posted for a while. Still no Matrix even or a lot of the catalog releases that came out with the beginning of the HD format :/
200 days of retention is ridiculous, and for only $5 more than newshosting I would switch in a second if I were to pay for a single unlimited user account.
So in summary if you don't want to read all that bullshit, Giganews is the best quality and well worth the difference between a $15 and a $20 service

Agreed there has been a couple time where retention has been a problem for me as well. Although newshosting has 140 days roughly. I noticed if you get something that has the 100MB archives they are often all incomplete when they are that old and you have to cross your fingers that the par set will cover it.

Thanks for the help.
Nous, when you say connect multiple times, do you mean you have to manually do it or is it done automatically (im using grabit btw). When im using isps news server, the dl is pretty slow, so im wondering if its because i have to connect several times.

Can you point where in grabit i can specify number of connections? Also by 4 connections you mean thread # 1-4, i f so my says grabbing article from isp on thread # 1-3 and the rest are idle.
Edit: I think i found it, right click on my default server and then select number of connections. Seems like it can handle only 4 since when i put 8 it said error or cant connect.

Thanks i found it, and edited the post above. Is it normal for download speed to go to 0 kb/s?. Mine goes up to about 200 and then down to 0, and it keeps doing that.

stuff on newsgroups downloads in small chunks, so you get the little pauses as it lines up another chunk of data.
if 200 is nowhere near your max speed i would be worried though, on 4-6 connections i can max out my connection and get a total of 2.6MB/s download

Yeah my max dl speed is about 800 kb/s and ive seen it go up to over 1 mb. I tried to increase my number of connections to 8 but it gave me weird errors on files that are waiting to be downloaded. It might be because im using isp's news server, i hear they are not that great. Errors i recieved - Unable to connect to isp, max number of connections reached (tornado v 1......some numbers) and error while selecting group. When i select 4 connections, no errors, it downloads the first 4 files.
Edit: darn it, another error - article not found, im trying to download a day old file and it keeps saying it for every bit, any idea what that could be?

I use Giganews and it is super fast. Newsbin and this site http://www.binsearch.info/ will find you all the goodies you want.
