how soon do you guys think it'll be before we see hddvd/bluray combo drives become avaliable (pc drives, not standalone devices) - i wouldnt even concider wading into this little war by picking a side and buying a single format drive - ill wait for combo drives, but honestly, how far off do you think they are? (and can we please not let this post digress into a which format is better argument Very Happy) do you think the first drives will have burn capabilities or just be for reading discs?

side question regarding lcd monitors: im looking at the dell montors that state DVI-D (Digital) with HDCP - when hd and bluray actually enable hdcp, will these monitors run into problems actually running protected movies at full res - are the dell screens future proof, or is hdcp dvi-d basically a buzz word to make you think it'll run everything just fine? (i know the vid card also has to support hdcp as well, but im only interested in the screens)

HDCP is a screen interface required to play protected movies without having his content either degraded in quality or simply made unavailable by the protection, but what you have also to look at in order to have 'true' or 'full' HD is the resolution of the LCD, seek for a res of 1920×1080 in progressive-scan (i.e. 1080p, aka "True High-Definition" or "Full High-Definition"), which is currently the higher resolution for all the blue-ray and hd dvd titles released so far.

yes i understand what hdcp means and is for, and i do realise that id be aiming for a 1080p vertical resolution, but what im getting at is the dvi-d hdcp. one thing i AM unsure about is the hdmi interface aspect.

Will having an hdmi vs a dvi-d interface be important when it comes to future copy protected media? will quality be degraded, because dvi-d is the older interface (correct?) when copy protection becomes enforced, will the dvi-d interface really be good enough, even if it IS hdcp enabled, thats what im getting at...

or is it really only worth buying a hd monitor (in regards to intention to playing hd movies) if it has hdmi with hdcp. - thats what im trying to get at... is an hdcp dvi-d enabled screen anything more than buzz-word to make buyers think they are completely covered for hd movies, when they really arent as well off as they'd expect. hope you understand what im trying to ask.

If the there isn't a winner in this war, I believe combo-DVDs is the way to go, not combo-drives.

In order for HDCP to be in effect, the movie studios need to enable them in each movie/medium. As of today, they have not enabled this, but who knows when they will.

2010 was the date i believe they wanted to start using hdcp. but id still like to know how dvi-d and hdmi compare and if a dvi-d hdcp screen IS fully future proof and will deliver the best possible picture quality when it comes ot HD.

i dont really like the idea of combo dvds. sounds like it could get pretty expensive to put multiple formats on the one medium.

Well according to the info i have quickly reviewed it is still unclear if the DVI-D interface is really future-proof...

"[DVI] is partially compatible with the HDMI standard in digital mode (DVI-D)."
"[HDMI] is a modern replacement for (...) older digital standards such as DVI (DVI-D & DVI-I)."

Thus i would go for a display with the 'mainstream' HDMI interface that will be used for all the TVs and related devices, which come in replacement of a DVI interface mostly used over the computer market and not fully compatible with HDMI... The latter seems more future-proof... My hope is that this fucking HDCP will never be necessary (it is soo trendy to remove moronic DRMs) coz that will be a pain in the ass if it cannot be bypassed easily.
