Is the manufacturer important? I heared that cheap no-name drives are more likely to break, but I also assume that external harddrives are less exposed to heat and therefore should be more resistent.

Should I still go for more expensive brands?
Which would you recommend?

Some have fans built into the enclosures and some are aluminium which helps keep the drive cool.

It goes without saying that the more expensive brands will be the better product. You get what you pay for when it comes to hardware peripherals.

You could just buy a hard drive and buy the enclosure separately.

Yeah, You should just buy a hard drive and buy the enclosure separately.

I would take an enclosure with both e-sata(1 or 2) and usb2 external interfaces, like the relevant Cooler Master X Craft version or the Thermaltake Muse eSATA 3.5.

If you want a network drive then take one with a Ethernet RJ45 interface, like one from Akasa (cf. http://www.akasa-europe.com/akasa_english/product_list/storage_enclosure_p2_menu.htm ), or a network-attached storage one.

Sounds interesting. Thanks, I'll take a closer look...

I just got a little bit paranoid since a harddrive died on me a few months ago.
