Gonna build me a new Dual Core system tomorrow and i wonder if i should put only vista on the machine this time. Right now i have an athlon 64 fx 52 and vista/xp dual install but i really dont like having two systems on my HD. Gonna put together a Dual Core 6600 system.

Do the majority of games run on Vista now (with patches even)? Are there enough drivers around yet? Or should i better install XP again?

I vote for XP. Vista is still beta imo. I installed Alcohol120%, rebooted, blue screen. Couldnt even boot into safe mode. Found out my version was xp. I couldnt even get into Vista to uninstall. Installed XP right away. There is barely nothing out for DX10 anyway.

Don't you love ignorant people? Sad Just because they are too dumb and don't know how to use their PCs, the OS is at fault and its obviously beta... Rolling Eyes

Oh yeah, and Vista is just about AERO and DX10, right? Rolling Eyes Jeez...

To the OP, if you have >=1GB RAM, there's no reason why not to move to Vista. Just keep XP for the buggy games that don't like Vista yet (STALKER being the latest example, although a Vista patch is on its way).

I don't give a fuck about Vista. All apps and games are 120% compatible with fully updated and well-maintained XP pro, minimum problems, maximum performance in games ... why would I screw myself by installing Vista? THIS IS MADNESS !!!

EDIT: I have 2 gb ram if it matters, lol

Madness?? THIS IS VISTAAAAA!

With 2GB ram, Vista flies... It and all other programs run smoother on it.

Personally I'm on the edge, but would probably fall to the XP side if only for the better performance in games (however marginal, better is better). Vista brings a lot of nice features with it, some are a little useless but there is a lot of good stuff going on, will take some getting used to, but it is worth upgrading.

If my machine was better, I would run Vista without a doubt. Does anyone have any benchmarks that show performance differences in games?

It's kinda hard to do those benchmarks with the drivers out right now. The latest from nVidia are a step in the right direction, but still not where they should be. nVidia has yet to start optimizing their drivers for performance. They are still in the stage of adding features. That's the only point that keeps me from totally migrating.

Indeed. I wont be fully migrating until I get my new system in a few months (well, depends on how it runs when I try it this weekend Wink) at which point the drivers should be working perfectly.. I was using it on my friends AMD64 3500 with 1Gb of ram today and it ran fine, it certainly pushed me towards upgrading.

bigger sata disks don`t work ,
modems degrade they speed ,
they are no drivers for nothing ,
Drm based system ,
don`t work without a net ,
you must reactivate it every 90 days over the net - no net no OS (steam any one) ,
min 1gig ram to run - so in the future games that need 2 gigs of ram will force you to have 3 gigs into your machine ,
no real dx10 game - halo 2 crap does not count ,
no Eax or advanced Sound Blaster effects ,
and so on ...............................................

tomshardwave did xp vs vista nice specific bencmhark in january (dnno about drivers status back then), but XP won in all the aspects in performance:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/

also i tried vista 32 with 4gb physical memory - runs great, same as xp with 2gb (as 32bit wont use more).

but one hting i tell ya: fuck 64bit edition. for now.

edit: its the same thing atm as with XP in 2001 - it was a pure crap back then, no? 2k was faster, very few games supported it, low driver support etc..

let vista to grow a bit (sp1) and let's see what happens..

but as i've said - i support open source and ubuntu 7.04 is already showing the light of open source little power (even dell starts selling pc's with ubuntu).

Everybody will be using it sooner or later if their into games and I mean if you got a 8800 card theres really no reason not to.
That said I do all my work on Linux and I would just eat my own head if I had to do my work or organize my music collection on Vista, I only game on Vista and only games like supcom and other "new" games

Nope, staying objective there were and still are a lot of glitches within the OS, annoying problems depending of the apps/games you use and of your hardware manufacturer lamentable customer support. Having XP in dual boot is still needed for half my PC use.

I have a dual boot setup for a while now, and I can say I haven't touched Vista in over a month now. Despite the problem of only getting 1/2 speed from my lowly gf5900, the main reason I don't use Vista at all now is that the layout a feel of Vista is crap IMO.

I think Vista is a good 6-12 months away (closer to 1 year) until it reaches point of comfortability with users. I did not like the look and feel of Vista at all. I changed settings to windows classic immediately. But it only took 1 hour for it to crash anyway where I had to format. I think MS was being pressured to release it and they did so knowing it was not ready at all.

I have it, but I don't use it. Will wait for Sp1 and some optimizing. And hopefully it will soon be more or less 100% compatible with new programs.

Thanks for the help all.

Still not ready yet to install the OS, tweaking and OC right now a bit (its a 6600 with 2GB RAM and a GF7950).

I have on my old Athlon 64, 2 GB, Vista on another partition and it runs a bit sluggish (mostly because i try to run older games).

Still, my fear is that games will run as fast as before my upgrade due to this supposed loss because of the Aero interface. I did read a lot of scary stuff about it.

Anyways, gonna install a legit copy of Vista and lets see...

PS: When the first GOOD DX10 games will be out i gonna buy a 8800 or something similar, right now i ran out of money Mad .

PPS: Does anyone know if there are any problems with running Apps like Netobjects Fusion, Dreamweaver or Flash Mx in their newest versions?
