Taking straight from ATIs mouth confirm lesser performance compared to the 8800 series... (at least the high ones: GTX & Ultra.

GTX is out of the question, too expensive over here. I wonder if ATI is capable of coming up with gts pricetag but better performance anytime soon.

8600? Why would I conisider it if I can afford 8800gts? I'm just thinking if I should take the 8800gts 320mb now, or wait some more for ATI...I want it to last at least until summer 2008.

If you are considering 8800GTS my advice would be to wait a few weeks if you can to see what ATI comes with. If we are lucky ATI's card will be alittle cheaper than 8800GTS and hopefully alittle better (than 8800GTS).

Sounds reasonable...that's what was bothering me all along. But is it really just a few weeks? Assuming it won't be a paper release like last time, when ATI is supposed to show the new line?

I swore there was another thread in the PC Games area where ATI announced that they wouldn't have anything to out perform the 8800 series this year. Btw the 320 8800 won't last you till 2008. There were benchmarks on it that it couldn't handle Quake 4 on full everything cause of the hi rez textures? or was it another game.

No need to buy now, o/c your 7900gs with some vmod, keep your money until directx10 games worth the change or that ATI new cards make both competitors' prices fall.

i bought an 8800 gtx PURELY because i believe id go insane waiting for ati to get their asses around to releasing it... i dont want to play that stupid game of theirs... also i was kinda pissed off that they were PURPOSELY holding back the release, even though its ready for release, so i went with nvidia so that i could enjoy current and old games NOW in all their glory. as far as next gen dx10 games go, i expect to buy a new card within a year that will last me for the next few years, but no matter how you cut it, i would not wait for the ati card. get the gts.

get hd 2900xt, because according vr-zone it's even faster than upcoming 8800 ultra (which willl be developed some hundred only). but in reality 2900xt should be the rival for 8800gts Laughing

or wait for the xtx edition, especially gddr4 1gb version;)

yes

I got myself an 8800 GTS two weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. However I was using a Radeon 9800XT before and was kinda forced to upgrade because I could barely play games anymore. If I was you, with a (much newer) 7900 gs and shader model 3 I would definitely wait with an upgrade for another 3-6 months (until the dx10 games come out etc.) and then go for an 8800 GTX or Ultra (they will be cheaper by then). Or get one of the ATI's (if they're good).

If you want to upgrade now, go for a 8800GTS with 640MB. You could also wait those few weeks to see what ATI has got. I wouldn't expect too much tho...

Your not gonna miss out with either sides card, heads or tails, Rock paper scissors, pick your favorite color. Laughing

Actually um wait until the NDA for the R600 lifts on the 14th and the reviews are published, supposedly it's faster then a 8800GTS at a $399 price point.

It's only a week away.

well think of it this way, if your gunna put THAT much money down on a card your going to be upgrading again anyways. The games comming out are gunna start using more high rez textures. I think it was toms hardware that put the 320MB version to the test and it start lagging bad on some games on max options due to it not having enough memory for the textures. unless of course you don't mind not running a game to it's max capabilities.

Yep, I've seen it too...the 320mb version looses serious ground in certain games, where hi-res textures are used even in 1280x1024. With Dx10 titles looming in the horizon, I believe it's a safe bet to assume that additional memory will be quite important for optimal fps.
However, to get the 640mb version I need to add around 100$ if I buy from a local shop.
Bummer. Smile

well seeing as im sure you could hold off for awile longer as an 8800 isn't directly needed yet unless your on some seriously old crap card so the wait would be worth it in the long run. Unless you buy from evga (yes im an evga smut) buy something decnent for now then use their step up program to get your 8800 once you saved up some more money within the 3 months that you have it.

now if you don't use nvidia.....um...just use some other random story....

8800GTS is superior. However, 2900 comes with 4 valve games and the price might be better than that of the GTS.
