So I was talking to one of the guys on here (Bearishsun) and is making/learning to do a game engine so I'm hopping on the boat and learning how to do 3d Modeling in autodesk 3dmax. Just curious if anyone here works with it and knows of some really good tutorials and so forth.

There are many helpful tutorials on the 3rd CD that Max comes with. However, if you REALLY want to learn 3D Modelling properly, I suggest you buy a book about it.

lol, i work with 3ds max Smile my best tip is to sign up at 3dBuzz (Link) and use their tutorial videos. Will get you started pretty quickly.

Blender is crap.

When it comes to Maya, 3D Max, and Lightwave, it's really just a matter of personal preference (there are of course differences, and especially when it comes to company productions).

Lightwave rocks - I havent used it for 10 years or so, but when I did - I loved it!

3dsmax is meant for big environemental modelling as well as action scenes etc

maya is better for characters, little geometry etc

lightwave is more for lighting effects. usually 3dsmax/maya professionals are using lightwave for lighting as well, as you can import/export different app files to each other

But since you´re just starting out, it doesn´t really matter if you go Maya och Max, you can learn modelling and rendering in both. I recommend those two anyway, they have the biggest communities (Max´s might be a bit bigger).

And you´ll probably be tempted to try different rendering engines, like V-Ray (the one we work with), Mental Ray or Maxxwell.. but stay away until you atleast know the default scanline renderer fairly well Wink

Thanks for the input everyone Smile I liked the tutorials that were built into the program but their linear as hell. They have you click buttons but don't tell you why you clicked it nor what it's supposed to do. That and they tell you to click something but half the time they don't tell you WHERE it's at.

Which app you use doesnt matter really. Its just a tool and you can make the same type of renders and the same scenes in any of the major apps out there..

I have tried several 3D applications. Rhino3D, Mirai, Lightwave3D, 3dsMax, Maya (for two minutes Razz ), modo and a few others I dont remember. Out of all of those the biggest are (I would say in this order) Max, Maya and Lightwave3D. The communities for all three are huge and there are tutorials for all of them, all over the interweb.

My personal opinion of each (from personal usage and "objective" articles about them):

Max: Annoying interface, very annoying. Too many ways of getting to the tools and doing the same thing. It just used to piss me off and confuse me. It was the first application I tried (orly? Very Happy). Quite a while ago it used to have the weakest renderer out of the three, but at the moment its supposed to be pretty good.

Maya: Didnt play with it that much, but from what I have heard it seems to have the biggest learning curve in the world. Same type of interface as in Max I would say.

LightWave3D: The one I fell in love with. Nice, clean and minimalistic UI, just the way I like it. Easy to use and not that bloated. It has (I am not sure if this is 100% true right now, Maya and Max might have caught up) the most powerful renderer (out of the box) of all three. Its shortcomings are the fact that the modeling and animating/rendering is split into two different programs, lousy symetry tools and so forth, somewhat "weak" character animation tools.. Layout and Modeler. Takes a bit of getting used to. In my opinion the best one out there. Wink

Either way its your choice. Try them all out and see which one fits your mindset when it comes to modeling stuff. For me it was LightWave, the way things were done in it just made sense to me.

Its not the program that makes great renders, its the artist. Wink The program is just a tool.

Nonsence. People learn apps differently and all other factors + you wont find game plugins for some programs and he mentioned he wanted to make game models. 3apps are like a car everyone likes different model. I say better use Max from the start if you want to have minimal amount of problems in the future.

I agree, go for max and FOR GODS SAKE use the 3DBuzz tutorials! They´re great for beginners!

ya I got some of their video parts of video 1. though I must say the 2 of the guys talking at the same time is annoying as all hell. One just needs to stfu while the other teaches.
