Ok so im in the market to upgrade my CPU. At the moment i feel i have a fairly capable system (SIG) but the X2 4600 is definitly holding it back. I was hoping to upgrade to AMD's quad-core setup this summer, but with the delays i really don't want to have to try run Crysis or the other big games of late summer with the 4600. My first reaction was to make things simple and stick with AM2 so i wouldn't have to worry about rebuilding my whole system. But after taking a gander at the X2 6000, im less than impressed.
So i suppose my question is
A) Should i hold out with the 4600 till the quads arrive? and do you guys think the 4600 has the power to handle the games between now and then at 1280x1024 with above average settings?
B) Buy the 6000 untill the quads appear? And is the 6000 really that much more powerful than the 4600?
C) Or Bite the bullet,ditch AMD and opt for a DUO or QUAD Intel chip and mobo?
I'm honestly at a loss here.Help!

Having a look at some charts, e.g. tomshardware, i dunno if changing the athlon 64 x2 4600+ to a athlon 64 x2 6000+ really worth the price.

Im abit of a bargin hunter and when i saw AMD's second most powerful CPU on the market going for in and around $250!, lets just say i was halfway through punching in my CC details before i read a single review.
I took alook on tom's hardware and the 6000 did seem to outdo the 4600 a fair bit. I was also checking out the DUO's and QUADS and from the looks of it if i really want to go through all the effort of changing mobo i'd need to buy from the E6700 and up (so with mobo in the range of 600-800 depending on Mobo). Which i'll then probably need to upgrade by the middle of 08. So i'm kinda leaning toward a+b atm. |
well thing is if you compare price ratio's vs. performance AMD comes out on top. Their CPU's are generally 100-200 dollars cheaper. except the x2 6000 vs. e6700.
6000+ = $229.99
e6700 = $319.00
they perform pretty much the same and you won't have to upgrade you MB. And I doubt having 6000+ is going to kill you in future gaming.
but none the less, C2D's are still kicking the shti out of AMD as they also offer really good OC'ing. So the decision is yours really.

Well thats another reason the 6000 option is more appealing to me, i don't oc anything. Never had the 'stones' for it. So i suppose i'd have to be looking higher again if i really wanted to take advantage of a whole new Mobo setup. There again to i could just upgrade to the Q6600 and be done with it. As for the Dual FX-74's, i could buy the 6000 + sli my 8800GTS and stick in another gig of DD2 for that price.
