Source is fucking awesome. IMO much better than UE3, or at least... the shitty implementation of UE3 in all the games so far. I prefer the "real" look of Source anyhow.

FYI, HL2 looks a little bit better since they upgraded it with the OrangeBox engine not to long ago.
Still an amazing looking game considering the age though. Valve does a great job with their texture art. Good textures make or break graphics.

True, I'm also using HDR maps (officially included only in the PS360 version of OB), but trust me these screenshots would still look this impressive even if I used a pre-OB build.

The HL2 shots are really nice. But it looks a bit unfair to me, the other shots doesnt even seem to have AA enabled, and they look like they've been taken just randomly while the HL2 shots are clearly taken to look as nice as possible (from a nice angle, higest AA/AF used etc).

But i do agree, graphics hasn't improved much at all for the last 5 years or so. AI isnt getting any better either, it's disapointing, especially after seeing quite a huge leap forward (at least with graphics) a few years back.

All fair points, but this is why I named the thread "HL2 Saga Artshots" (instead of Screenshots).
Also my intention wasn't to compare with modern games (that was only a small part of the OP), but yes, Gears looks bad due to bad character art, bad post-processing, horrible shader aliasing that won't go away, etc. All that while technically it's a much more advanced title (eg Marcus in Gears 1, has 2-3 times the polygons an HL2 character has).

2. I never claimed that posting screenshots from games is art Artshots is a term I use to differentiate them from actual ("as seen in the game") screenshots.
3. Indeed BioShock can look amazing. 
4. Gears of War 2's graphics were rated 10/10 by IGN so I was having a laugh

Well at least you didn't use the "Can you make better art? No? So stfu!" argument.
Other (modern) games that have good art, in my opinion: Mass Effect, Portal, Braid, Tales of Monkey Island. That's about what I can think of for now.
BTW, I didn't like HL2 at all, so that might be it. So looking at these screenshots, without the cloud of nostalgia, I see boring dystopian city, not unlike STALKER.
