I have an Athlon XP 3500+ @ 2.2Ghz. I'm thinking of upgrading to a dual-core, but my local comp dealer tells me I won't notice any difference if I buy a, let's say a Athlon 64 X2 4400+.
Is he serious or am I just a newbie when it comes to computers? A dual-core cpu vs my old 3500 single core, that should make a noticable difference, no?
Furthermore I have a Asrock Dual SATA-2 MB, a GeForce 7950GT GPU and 2 Gb of ram.
Just to clarify: if I buy a new dual-core cpu - what difference would it make? Is my current cpu slowing me down?
just realise that a dual core cpu will only use a single core if the application its running isnt multithreaded... so yeah, in some games you probably wont notice much of a difference. but for multicore games and programs, you will.
You can go back to the guy that told you that and give him an invitation to get some real computer knowledge.
you'll notice a difference regardless if it's multi-threaded or not, it's called multi-tasking Games don't have to share one core with everything running in the background, game will use one core and windows will use the other. Not to mention the memory controller is located on the CPU now giving you better performance in that sense as well. So ya, go smack the bitch that told you that in the face. You'll see nothing BUT a performance increase.
