I prefer shooters that are present day, near future or something that was max 10 years ago.
I'm tired of all WW2 shooters (when the first CoD was released I had enough). All future wars against aliens feels ridiculous. Present day or close to it feels a lot better. 80's tech is almost even better. Battlefield 2 is great in that regard, same goes for Americas Army, Operation Flashpoint and Armed Assault.
Same for strategy games, todays tech ftw!

Ya no shit, I'm with ya on that, I wish more shit like 2142 style themes would come out. Though that takes talent and creativity. All these WWII games come out cause they don't need a story. the story is alreayd been written, all they have to focus on is the models and gameplay and people buy into that gay shit. |

Armed Assault is quite good and the 1.07 patch is nearly ready from what I've read on Bohemia's forums though it was a while since I played it due to the high system requirements.
Call of Duty and Brothers In Arms are also rather interesting and so is Medal of Honour but that title is more action oriented.
SWAT/Rainbow6 series are quite good and very tactical though it's not really "war".
Ghost Recon and Advanced Warfighter could be fun titles and the sequel will soon be out for PC users.
Delta Force series was quite good for it's time.
Joint Operations can be fun but it's very mutliplayer focused and require a good server in order to enjoy the game fully.
Vietcong is a interesting take on the Vietnam war and so is several other recent titles that I unfortunatively don't remember right now.
Probably missing alot of other titles since there are several released every year though most are more like action titles than tactical warfare.
