I've installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my second disk, it runs fine except dial-up modem. Jeah I know who the hell has dial-up these days, but I'll just have to satisfy with it for a short time. Anyway… I've heard that Linux has problems when it comes to winmodems, and that's totally true. The thing is that I've tried everything there is on net. Downloaded drivers, compiled it (which isn't easy thing to do if you've never done it before), installed them (succesfully-without any errors), but the bloody thing just isn't working. Even tried pppconfig… nothing. I hate it going to waste, but what is the point if I don't have Internet access? Anyone has any clues to what I'm doing wrong? I'm new at Linux so I don't konw much about it, but I would like to try it…

Winmodems are crap. Go pick up a decent internal 56k modem for 5-10 bucks. I can almost guarantee that the winmodem wont work in linux because it relies on special software to do the work of the hardware that gets ripped out to save a few bucks. And I don't think any linux coder out there has a pathetic enough life to spend countless hrs reverse engineering junk software for a junk product.

And I'm not saying all that to be mean or pick on you for still relying on dial-up...I just once owned one of those POS devices and to this day bemoan the 100 bucks I foolishly threw away on the thing...and that was like 7 or 8 yrs ago.
