Ok guys, I'm currently building a file server to have at home for my hdd's so I can slim up my gaming pc. The new file server will be a celeron 2.6Ghz (S775), 512mb DDR2 RAM (to start with, will upgrade to 1gb later on), an Elitegroup P4M890T-M motherboard (integrated gfx and so on), a PCI-E controllercard for atleast 4 SATA ports (haven't decided which one yet).

However what I'm thinking about is to run ubuntu on it instead of Windows Server 2003 for example. However I have some needs. Drivers must work well and I have no idea how the situation is for Ubuntu nowadays or Linux in general.

I also need to be able to remote to it with some kind of encryption (SSH or similar) because it will have no screen, mouse or keyboard installed when set up. Encryption needed on remote because I will remote to it from other PC's then at home.

File transfers however will only be internal from it to my gaming pc so no advanced FTP host is required there.

Oh btw, the server will be connected to my router and that way shared internally in the network. So running DMZ on the router towards the server is NOT an option. Any guides for opening ports/whatever need on Ubuntu is appreciated..! Smile

So what I would like you to give me is the needed apps, is it doable with ubuntu on that hardware configuration and some generals tips. All help appreciated.. Smile

Everything is do-able on linux.. we're not talking windows here mister, no need to worry about things not being configurable Razz..

I would suggest you go for pure debian though, as you don't need the extras that ubuntu provides. Forget FTP for internal stuff, just use Samba and windows file shares.. VNC has built in encryption for visual remote desktoping if you want that (will require that you install a windows manager onto the base debian install.. might best to stick to command line using SSH).. As for port forwarding, well, debian wont have an issue if you don't turn on its firewall, just do as you would do a windows application.. 23 for SSH..

You will find that Linux is far easier to configure on older hardware than windows is, most of your old hardware should be found on boot, I would give my right nut if you have any issues with anything other than the Sata controller. But I doubt it. Linux is built for this kind of setup.

Firstly, do a base debian install. Then grab SSH, VNC, SAMBA and WebMin (using apt.. e.g. apt-get install samba)..

Use webmin to configure everything and you will be set.

Well Ubuntu server is Debian really.. its just a pre-setup. Not always the best option though as it can be bloated.
