since vcdquality sucks for hd rips, I'm wondering if there is a better site for information on x264 HD rips with comments on quality and such ... there are sometimes like 3-4 different releases for a movie -- hddvd/bluray or 720p/1080p or 4GB/8GB/12-15GB+ rips, and sometimes the samples are so different you can't really compare them (looking for good size/quality tradeoff). most of the time I just get the 1 DVD septic releases, but sometimes it would be good to know if there is a significant gain for the bigger download/increased bitrate.
suggestions? I don't need access to them, but I wonder if there is some sort of torrent discussion board that would have this sort of talk. I know there is HD bits, but something public where they actually discuss releases would be good. I don't know if this last part is against the rules, but I'm not looking for download links, just forum links.

Forget about that. If you want quality and use Usenet search for CRTLHD or ESIR. Scene HD rips are POS. Waste of download. If you dont use Usenet then there are 2 sites that do in house encodes. One has CTRLHD and ESIR while other has SZ. Get only movies with this tags.

Nouse, all I can say (for the millionth time ) is that scene x264 releases, for the most part are shit. They are often out of sync, use too less of bitrate for the sake of 1DVD5 size and whole lot of other problems.

If I get ridiculous in my bandwidth use I'm sure I'm going to hear about it from my ISP. Plus my external HDD is only 200GB, so I don't have all the storage in the world for these things. No I don't want to burn them.

i had that septic release... it was such rubbish, the audio was way out of sync originally, and the sync fix didnt work properly either... the beginning was synced nicely, but by the end of the film there was a noticable delay.... usually esir do a decent job, but i wouldnt call them flawless... but i do have their 720p matrix releases which are pretty nice, and their first shot at final fantasy sucked, but their proper was ok.
posted purely because i had allready uploaded for someone else
ps: lol @ shrek3 in hd, you misguided fewl
im definately building up my hd selection as well... 26 so far, excluding those kickass pixar shorts that are amazing in hd.

Well, the best (and only) way would be to connect your PC to the TV. Some people were looking into a mini-bluray/mini-hddvd (where you burn the x264 with a structure of a bluray/hddvd into a normal dvd, kinda like a miniDVD), but that project went nowhere as far as I know.

there's also the popcorn hour a-100 that looks very promising, it still needs some fw improvement though. if i had the money, i'd buy it. it has the best price compared to other h264 standalones.

Then you have no hV or Septic releases, because they count for the most of the scene (x264) and I have personally downloaded quite a few bad ones over the last few months.

H2 = DiR = LSe => CtrlHD
And CtrlHD rips now start to show quality gains over Esir, which has less encoders and pressure to release first can be seen in recent releases.
About the 720/1080 choice, on a 1080 hdtv, I think the choice is clear. So yes, they are a bit bigger, but 1080 triumphs.

i just download anything with awesome visuals, ie sky captain, ratatouille, final fantasy, van helsing etc, or anything that is a classic must-have-else-gay film, like face off, the rock, the frighteners, blade runner...

which is the better one IYO? |
after comparing them both in photoshop, to be honest, i think in this neither really look superior to me... both have good and bad spots, the rats right hand looks very blocky on the septic release, but the pot thing in the background looks a lot smoother on the septic version as well, and looking at the eyes and the fur on the esir release, looks noticably worse because it seems like esir tried to sharpen the picture or something... yeah neither release is noticably better in the video department, but hopefully esir's release has decent audio... avoid the septic release at all costs of THIS movie
