Soooo this is a MMORPG but without you having to pay monthly?
I tried the E3 demo, and it was the most fun iv'e had playing a game online since DII.

Its not pay to play, and looks very good. I think the character development was a tad lacking, but its understandable. I can't wait to get this baby going.

yeah it might not be pay to play but they are likely to be putting out expansions every few months which you will feel almost forced to buy to get any new stuff. you'll probably end up paying just as much.

That's my opinion too. but you can at least control the costs without loosing you account.

I loved the E3 demo too, very cool.
The thing about character developement is that a lot of skills weren't even in, and you couldn't even go anywhere (stuck at level 15 for the event!) so I'm sure the character development will be a lot better once we have control over it from level 1.
Also the thing about the expansions, even if you don't own a certain expansion to enter an area, you can still get invited to that area!!! You just can't enter them on your own, you must be invited to one. So in this respect, you are still not forced to purchase to get the new stuff.

Yeah, you can get friends to play with you, and only 1 person buys the expansion and you can all go through it. It really should be quite cool.

Yep, probably will be one of the few games I'll buy as soon as it gets out (I'm usually more of a budget game kinda guy).
Actually played pretty well on my slow pc too, so that's a pro. And the concept of pay-once-mmorpg (if worked out well) just deserves some consumer's support.

I forget where I read it but all new content you will have to pay for. So don't expect alot of free content.

Childish? What you mean? It's dark medieval times, I think it's scary times where ppl are getting killed for nothing, you step from the city gates and some ogre eats you for dinner.

ArenaNet's unique streaming technology forever eliminates the concept of patching a game. You don't have to wait a month for the next big patch to experience new content. Instead, the game constantly and intelligently streams new content to your computer in the background while you play. The world can change continually. This allows us to build a much more dynamic game world than any that has existed before. |
I am not sure but I think that means you dont have to pay to recive updates (naturally they could have you pay to get all updates in a certain periode)
I think they said they proberly would need to update like 5 times a day in the start...

There will be expansion packs to NEW areas that you must pay for!!! But if you are INVITED to these areas, you DO NOT need to have it installed. If you want to be the one entering these areas on your OWN or to invite other friends, you NEED to own this and it will cost money.

Not quite. If you figure playing EQ1 is what, around $12/mo? Plus the $30-$40 expansions every 8-10 months, you end up paying a lot less.
Look at it this way:
EQ: $12/mo
Expansions (every 8-10 months or so): $40 - $50
1 year: $320 (exp. packs @ $40)
Guild Wars: $50 once
Expansions (who knows how often): probably around $30 - $40
1 year: $170 (exp. packs @ $40, 3 exp. packs, any more would be crazy in one year?)
You end up saving much more than w/ EQ. I can't speak for EQII but as of 2002, there were exp. packs coming out every 8-10 months. Sony and Varrant knew consumers would bite however.
dyn IP addys, subnet & mac spoofs, email routing, and if all else fails, wi-fi. banned? lol, its more like brb. =p

I played on one of the beta weekends. Very nice game. It was still beta mind you, but quite fun. I kind of reminded me of EverQuest meets Dungeon Siege in a way.
I'm certainly going to buy this and try and resist buying all the upgrade. I would just like a MMORPG I can play with my friends casually without having a monthly fee. If I only play 4 times a month, I would hate to pay for it monthly.

I've played the demo, why would you say it's real time? Just boz you can press a button and he swings the weapon? You can just as well click the mob and he will start fucking it automatically. Maybe there are combos, I don't know haven't played much, or maybe you just get them at a higher level, but from what I have seen it's not real time. The game is nothing special, I personally think WoW is alot better. I think the popularity of this game is largley based on the fact that you don't have the pay monthly fee's. I wouldn't really call it an MMO since it's all instanced. I played the Demo with a friend and I could contact him via private messaging, we agreed to meet each other on a specific location/locations, but we never saw eachother, while at the same spot, communcating to eachother via PM. this is really where the game ended for me......
If WoW or EQ2 had no monthly fee's, this game would be a 0-sec flop.

Ignorance is bliss... Oh wait, no it isn't.
In the top left corner, there is a drop down menu, telling you which district your in. You weren't in the same one. And you say you've played MMO's before. Geez.
The main attraction for this game is the fact that it's not the person who invests the most amount of time that wins. It takes skill/strats to win, along with a good build and a decent team. None of that, I'm 15 levels(because I'm a gamer with no life and spends all day playing this, just so that I can pwn people 15 levels lower than me) higher than you, so you have no chance bs.
And none of that "I can stunlock you, and theres not a thing you can do about it". Balancing seems to be something the new employees at Blizzard suck at (Arena.net was made from some very high up ex-Blizzard employees who were key in making starcraft/diablo, hence the new empolyees).
But if you want to pay per month for a skill-less grindfest (badly disguised as quests) with devs just waiting to swing the nerf stick, go right ahead. Be my guest.
[/endrant]
DISCLAMER: I have played WoW. Level 42 Mage. My friend has a 60 Pally.
