Wifi connection drops from 24MBPS to 1MBPS and loses entire connection.
But, right when I reboot the computer - it connects again at 24mbps or 36mbps..It will last about an hour or so, then drops to 1 again. Upon reboot, comes right back up.

Now, this sounds strange as it seems rebooting the pc regains the connection back.

Using a US Robotics 54mbps PCI card. Bought a wifi booster antenna 7db.

Is there any settings on my PCI card I can change to correct this. It doesnt seem to be an antenna issue..

Thanks.

Step 1 : Put your router on top of closet or something high. If you live in a house and the router is downstairs and you are upstairs. Then bring it up.

Step 2: Make sure you got the latest drivers for your network card. Had the same problem it was fixed by downloading new drivers.

Step 3: Change the Wireless Channel to the heights number you have.

Thanks...I think it is the drivers since I let Windows load them. Everytime I let windows update install drivers, they end up being from the year 1980. I will update drivers direct from USR website.

I installed the drivers from the CD. Well, now I have this nice GUI interface which tells me alot of stats. Yesterday, same issue though - lost connectivity. I then took out all my PCI Cards. I only kept my WIFI card in. I changed slots too. So far, it works fine - no drop..Lets see how long it can go.

How come people don't secure their WIFI connections? I mean, with my lappy, I have atleast 2-3 open connections at all times.

I was using neighbors connnection.. Well, I decided to have my cable internet reconnected due to instability with wifi. But most of all, I needed to open ports for gaming, ftping, etc but couldnt since I didnt own router.

So, anyway, I got cable internet for less$ this time at $19/month..(instead of $29)..and now back to normal..Will use neighbors only in emergency. They are smart enough to run firewall and close all ports, but dumb enough to not secure connection.
