|

Not sure what has been hit but no doubt us PC gamers are worst hit.
Source:
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2009/11/10/ea-cancels-12-games-lays-off-1500-jobs/1
Quote: | Electronic Arts has announced plans to make more than 1500 staff redundant by April 2010, as well as the cancellation of at least 12 games that are currently in development. At the same time, the publisher has just bought out PlayFish, developer of popular social networking games for around $300 million USD, according to Gamasutra.
EA hopes to save $100 million USD annually as a result of the lay-offs and cancellations, with the redundancies spread across all devisions. 900 developers, 500 publishing staff and 100 corporate suits are set to go, according to reports.
The studios which will be most heavily affected are EA Redwood, Tiburon, Mythic and EA Black Box.
The news follows on from EA's recently published financial reports, which revealed a net loss of $391 million across the July - September period, an increase of 26 percent compared to the same period in 2008.
"Laying off employees and closing facilities is never pleasant," said EA Chief John Riccitiello. "We have a lot of compassion for those impacted but these cuts are essential for transforming our company.[/i]"
"Electronic Arts has a core slate of games label and sports franchises that we will iterate on a either annual or bi-annual basis. And I think you know what those major titles are - all of them are selling or have sold in their most recent edition 2 million units or more," he continued.
"After that, we’ve got The Sims and Hasbro, and frankly anything that doesn’t measure up to looking like it can pencil out to be in very high profit contributor and high unit seller got cut from our title slate from this point going forward."

I know that EA hating bandwagon will have a party with this news but this is actually pretty bad. EA was getting increasingly better for PC gaming last 2 years or so, when other companies went console only EA still brought most of major titles to PC.
Would be nice to know how many of the canceled games were new innovative IPs and how many were sequels.

Sounds like they don't have much choice in needing to do this though.
It's a business at the end of the day.

@ Glottis: Do you mean EA as a developer or publisher?Because there is a huge difference in EA's policy when their team studios make games for pc.
Games rumoured to be cancelled so far are:
- Mirror's Edge 2
- Madden Series
- Fifa Series for pc
For fifa series there is disappointment in the xbox creation team because the sales were below their expectations, piracy in x360 was bigger this year (the latest ban wave tells it all) so the future of the series is in in doubt.

As long as EA's own IP continues, I'll be happy. Dead Space is a great game and one deserving of a franchise, IMO.

I thought madden and fifa were huge sellers. Dont know about madden for PC but Fifa has a pretty decent community and completely raped PES in sales.

that's what i'm wondering about too. huge target audience as well as (comparatively) low development costs = cash cow, with or without piracy

I really dont see how to improve these sport games anymore so that they would offer something new every year. Minor tweaks for last yeasr is what I have seen,

That's true but:
Selling games + laying off staff = more money

It's the whole formulaic nonsense that ruined the soul in game development, bleeding into uninspired annual sequels.

Considering it has generated more wealth and prosperity than any other system in the world. . . yes it is.
Is it perfect? No it is not.
Can it be abused? Yes it can.

I agree. i would rather see more spread out releases with bigger changes/improvements if possible.

With the recent change in free unlimited Tier 1 trial accounts for warhammer online, I see that money grinding dog being the first main death of a game in that list of devs...
they keep screaming on news pages that "we are here to stay", "we support UO and so forth for years and still do", "we are staying", "yes we are staying were not going nowhere"...
see the pattern? to me seems like pure worried people having to keep the cash rolling in to the bitter end.. Also all the talk about the hack tools and how its being monitored by "stealth" dev players .. lmfao sureeee, its pretty rife on the news pages of the game of late. If you got people floating in the air shooting at you day in day out and nothing changes in 2mths about it then there are serios client side issues...
With that recent announcing, it does not paint a pretty picture for WAR..
Gamesworkshop are going to be fuming...

there is no way in hell that the console version of fifa is in doubt as stated above, it's still one of their best selling games + probably the most watched sport in the world - and we are going to have only 1 game left in the end?
surely not. they know what they are doing. they know they are on the right way. and they will keep on producing the console versions.

They payed huge ammounts of money for exclusive nfl lincence, and they'll loose it soon, so maybe that means they are pulling out of that front altogether.

yup the those licenses aren't exactly cheap, but if you factor in the low development effort (just look at those miniscule changes from year to year) it's still a good deal.

You make the common mistake as eveyone else. This is the simple wrong approach: Sales=Profit. You forget all these:
Licenses, staff costs, commercials, legal and i can go on and on for one page.
This year's Fifa on x360 was pirated by many console gamers.Numbers show that piracy on x360 has increased significally this year.5% of the consoles were banned in the last wave.It may seem a low percentage but it's not.
