|
 |
A man who hacked into a third party Valve file server and stole the credit card numbers of Steam Cyber Cafe users was caught by police in the Dutch town of Maastricht this Tuesday.
According to the Dutch Ministry of the Interior, the 20 year old hacker had managed to "burn 13 million Euros playing poker online and shopping for notebooks, flat screens and MP3 players" before being caught.
Known by the online handle MaddoxX, the man first made news when he boasted of the Valve hack in April of 2007.
"We also don't want money from VALVe," he wrote on the No-Steam forum last year. "We want a simple message on their site."
MaddoxX then posted an archived file that included unverified credit card numbers, transaction amounts, Valve's supposed bank balance, and data that reportedly allowed the creation of counterfeit cyber cafe certificates.
Valve quickly responded to the breach of security, creating an email address titled "Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com" to encourage citizens to help the authorities track down MaddoxX.
In addition to the Valve caper, MaddoxX is being charged with hacking his way into an Activision server and subsequently downloading an unfinished version of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. MaddoxX also stole 50,000 credit card numbers from an English ticketing website, according to the ITExaminer.
The criminal was eventually nabbed by a Dutch police unit called Team High Tech Crime. There is no word on whether members of Team High Tech Crime go by code-names or wear special uniforms.

Sure it can - to an extent.
If he hadn't done it, someone else probably would have. The world needs people with initiative like this to keep the lazy money grubbing corporate fuckers in check. These billing/secure storage companies sit on their ass all day not bothering to make revisions until the shit hits the fan - this keeps them on their toes.
Now, whether he resold that data to someone else or actually used it to charge stuff for himself is another matter entirely. That part can't be defended.

He should have just kept quiet about it. Who knows, if he was discrete enough he would have been able to retire into old age and live large with his stolen credit cards.

Exactly, i always laugh at films when someone hacks into a computer network to get to some top secret data. If it's so sercret, why keep it connected to the net! To have companies do this in real life is just ridiculous. It must be possible to back up all that important customer details every couple of hours and have the backup machine disconnect from the network.

What is the point in disconnecting the backup machine, if you have a live machine connected to the network at all times? Here's a little tip: you can control network traffic effectively by the use of one or more industry-standard routers strategically placed at the edge of your network and/or locations within your network through the use of ACLs, FW, and NAT.

Stole 13.000.000 euros, eh? In the Netherlands that means having to shovel weeds for 150 hours in a community lot with a reprimanding "Please don't do it again, sir." when he has to hand in the shovel. I hope he didn't kill anyone, that'd mean he'd have to shovel weeds for at least 20 hours more.
Also, no. "Team High Tech Crime" does not use special uniforms. They're usually in civilian clothing. It's a shame. You'd expect awesome neon/silver/gold reflecting uniforms that go 'beep' and 'boop'.

I doubt he'd be your "hero" if your credit card was in his database |
Of course that cc fraud thing was a one step too far, but as stated before he had a good run with these things

By not having that "live machine" host all the data but only the recent stuff, before those backup?

servers's steam where one can download free games and updates and where Valve have their customers's accounts informations are too protected to have access to everyone. backups can be done only with the originals so Maddoxx and all others Valve's hackers can also sucks them ass

He was smart enough to hack Valve, but that's about it.
Spending the money like he did was just plain stupid, not to mention everything he did later.
He deserves to be in jail
