Since nobody seemed to care, i decided to get the ball running. The original was good enough in itself, i don't know what else they can add to make it even better, but they try anyway, so personally i can't wait to see the result.

The game is set for a mid may release. According to the official forums, they are already testing the final - release - builds internally, so the game might be out any minute now. It will have a downloadable version through gamersgate (confirmed) and probably even d2d (not yet confirmed). Just like the original did.

This is an expansion pack, so the original is required to play it.

Gah, I'm so tired of those 4x games.

They're just Build fastest>colonize fastest>exploit AI.

They should just be called 1X:expand games.

Yeah how horrible is it that they Force you to play these games, or even pay attention to the fact there is a new one Rolling Eyes

Lets see.. 4X =
eXplore -> I guess most of them have this aspect
eXpand -> You just mentioned it yourself
eXploit -> you also mentioned this one Razz although it is meant in a different context originally
eXterminate -> Isnt this the ultimate goal of every strategy game, to get rid of the opponent?

Honestly: no idea what problems you have with the 4x classification, but i think the description fits this type of games well.

On a sidenote: SOTS is hardly a typical 4X game. It more like what Homeworld could have been with an 'overland' strategy layer above the tactical combat engine. The whole game is built around one thing, that is space combat. Then again, my guess would be that most of us - not all obviously - loved the traditional 4x space games because of that.. space combat with / and customizable ships. I certainly did. So SOTS for me is like the concentrated essence of what i love in 4x space strategy games.

Well...I got bored of SOTS pretty soon. Tried to play the non campaign part with normal difficulty (that is how the games are actually meant to be played and not in superhuman) and...well...after I researched the Sword Of The Stars and built some of these the opponents were no match anymore. Before the Sword Of The Stars era...well we didn't meet each other because our tech levels did not allow us to travel so far Razz

The campaign part was quite boring aswell...just some random missions which didn't have anything in common...no storyline or what so ever

Well....Master Of Orion was definately better and more challeging 4x game then SOTS.

I really don't know what you are talking about Smile

1) The game had no campaign at all, merely single missions.
2) This game is meant to be played in multiplayer mode primarily, for that it is perfect, as while still being 4x, it lacks the micromanagement nightmare, meaning that multiplayer games have a chance to be actually finished.
3) The game was patched heavily since the initial release.. latest version's AI kicks ass, it rapes even the veteran players. Without any significan cheating i might add. It simply plays a lot more agressively than before, and well.. good luck keeping up with it when colonizing.

It might be worth noting, that most multiplayer games never get into the dreadnaught era, sometimes not even into the cruiser era. Then again, skirmishing with destroyers is a lot of fun as well, especially since against the humans you are in a constant weapons race, both in more guns than the opponent, and also in getting better ones.

Still, while the game is meant for multiplayer gaming, the AI was improved a lot as well, so if you did find it not being challenging enough, you might want to try again with the latest patch (that is 1.2.2)

The game was actually a hidden gem in the shitstorm of pc gaming.

One can ofc dislike the GENRE, but fact stays: the game's quality is rather good, the idea is original and it delivers its promises.

This just makes a great game better imo, very well done. There's an update coming along the pipeline that should add some nice features.

Anyone who's into space startegy games should definately give this a try at least. One of the best games I've played in recent years.
