Sword of the Stars: Born of Blood
Quote: | Forged in the fires of advanced biotechnology, a new race has emerged from the shadows to threaten the SotS universe. Born of blood, driven by hunger and launched on a relentless search for the Gods that made them, these brutal warriors will stop at nothing to find "The Great Masters." As they tear the galaxy apart, a dark new chapter in the annals of interstellar conquest will begin. Bringing with it new strategies, new weapons, and a new view of "resources."
They call themselves The Zuul. And they have uses for you.
|
Features:
Quote: | * 1 new race - the Zuul - with 80+ ship sections and Tunnel Drive FTL technology.
* Massive Zuul slaver disks allow them to take slaves and use them to boost production on Zuul fortress worlds.
* Over 15 new weapons with which to battle, including Boarding Pods!
* Over 25 new technologies to research and deploy.
* New diplomatic Data and Comm systems. Make demands! Ask for help in attacking specific targets. Warn players off from the worlds you have yet to claim!
* More Intelligence technologies allow you to keep track of enemy ships, tech and battles.
* A new trade route system making economic control and output even more vital for military success. Star freighters ply the trade routes making money for the player but are also vulnerable to raiders. Active piracy and escort battles enter the SotS universe with a bang.
* Details combat results and status graphs allow you to track the rise or fall of your empire over time.
* A variety of new ship sections for the original races to help meet this new threat.
* More tactical combat options.
* New combat arena as ships are called upon to battle in the dangerous depths of Node-space.
* New random menaces / exploration threats.
* 2 new Scenarios (for both single- and multiplayer).
* 5 new galaxy types.
* Various GUI and multiplayer enhancements.

Since nobody seemed to care, i decided to get the ball running. The original was good enough in itself, i don't know what else they can add to make it even better, but they try anyway, so personally i can't wait to see the result.
The game is set for a mid may release. According to the official forums, they are already testing the final - release - builds internally, so the game might be out any minute now. It will have a downloadable version through gamersgate (confirmed) and probably even d2d (not yet confirmed). Just like the original did.
This is an expansion pack, so the original is required to play it.

Gah, I'm so tired of those 4x games.
They're just Build fastest>colonize fastest>exploit AI.
They should just be called 1X:expand games.

Tried to play the non campaign part with normal difficulty (that is how the games are actually meant to be played and not in superhuman) and...well...after I researched the Sword Of The Stars and built some of these the opponents were no match anymore. Before the Sword Of The Stars era...well we didn't meet each other because our tech levels did not allow us to travel so far
The campaign part was quite boring aswell...just some random missions which didn't have anything in common...no storyline or what so ever
Well....Master Of Orion was definately better and more challeging 4x game then SOTS. |
I really don't know what you are talking about
1) The game had no campaign at all, merely single missions.
2) This game is meant to be played in multiplayer mode primarily, for that it is perfect, as while still being 4x, it lacks the micromanagement nightmare, meaning that multiplayer games have a chance to be actually finished.
3) The game was patched heavily since the initial release.. latest version's AI kicks ass, it rapes even the veteran players. Without any significan cheating i might add. It simply plays a lot more agressively than before, and well.. good luck keeping up with it when colonizing.
It might be worth noting, that most multiplayer games never get into the dreadnaught era, sometimes not even into the cruiser era. Then again, skirmishing with destroyers is a lot of fun as well, especially since against the humans you are in a constant weapons race, both in more guns than the opponent, and also in getting better ones.
Still, while the game is meant for multiplayer gaming, the AI was improved a lot as well, so if you did find it not being challenging enough, you might want to try again with the latest patch (that is 1.2.2)

The game was actually a hidden gem in the shitstorm of pc gaming.
One can ofc dislike the GENRE, but fact stays: the game's quality is rather good, the idea is original and it delivers its promises.

i totally missed Sword of the stars, perhaps it's worth looking into. I played the tutorial of Homeworld before getting tired but some of these games are great. i'm just stupid.

This just makes a great game better imo, very well done. There's an update coming along the pipeline that should add some nice features.
Anyone who's into space startegy games should definately give this a try at least. One of the best games I've played in recent years.
