Hello, well i finally decided to see what is vista like. So i got myself Windows_Vista_Ultimate_x64_Permanently_Actived_Edition. So i thought it should install like Xp, i burned, and restarted computer, chose to boot from the disc. The first problem was it took WAY TOO LONG to start, about 40 minutes (XP installation takes max about 30 mins for the whole installing process). Then the screen where i chose my lang. came up, again after i selected the lang. it took about 10 mins to switch to the other screen where i chose what kind of install i want. I chose new install and again it took about 10 minutes for the prompt to come up. It searched for my HDD's but it found none, so i decided to do it manually and looked in MY COMPUTER, but there werent any HDDs! So im i doing something wrong, does it usually take that long for vista to start up and install (i didnt even get to install, and spend 1 hour just trying to make the prompt for install to come up). Also how do you know if your comp is x64, or x32 (i always thought my e6700 was x64), maybe thats why it was so slow?.
Thanks for any help, yes before you ask, i searched but found nothing of this sort.

It odd. The Vista install takes usually 25 minutes to complete, not just to start.

And an E6700 is a 64bit cpu.

Whats the best bios emulator to register vista with? (easiest to use, less chances of bugging out and failing). I already have the vista install cd (and the nope rls isn't on easynews atm) so id rather just seek out the emulator.

There are so many custom one-click installers of the same loader that it's hard to track. Just go to a forum you trust, and get the most recent one that has good comments.

Dominae, why do you have to bring your P4 2.2GHz, 1GB, FX5200 into every thread that has Vista in it? Rolling Eyes We know that shitty hardware doesn't run Vista well...

Install the x86(32 bit) version. No reason to use x64 at this time. Driver support sucks and I can't think of one application or game that takes advantage of the 64 bit architecture. They made a far cry 64 bit ver but I think that was just part of a marketing deal with AMD, it actually ran worse on 64 bit with just minor upgrades.

So yeah, go for the 32 bit install, get the all-in-one Bill gates, install ultimate x86 with bios emulation and you should be good to go.

With newer hardware, "driver support sucks" is invalidated. Software runs the same, but security on the other hand is way better on the 64 bit version. There's no reason why not to try the 64bit version, then switch to 32bit if it doesn't suit the needs of the user.

Why do you keep insisting that I have your hardware.

I have a 6000+ with 2gigs of ram (ddr2) - 15000rpm 40GB system drive and a Sapphire Radeon X1950PRO and some random new paraphernalia (latest LiDE-scanner, etc).

I've run VISTA on this rig, and 3 of the components don't work in VISTA (including my scanner and laser printer).

And other stuff works like shit (X-Fi) ... while performance is less than XP, and some things it can't even run... for no apparent reason.

XP runs better. And I don't care about you and your P4. Take CaptainCox advice and update it, and upgrade to XP.

You're such a stupid kid. Jeez, your parents must've beat you in the head too often.

Lulz, I meant what you really have, not the things you drool about when Vista can't recognize your 6y/o scanner.

Another Vista bash?

To date Vista now supports 2.2 million devices; of which, 700,000 new devices have been added since the November launch. That's more device support since it's initial release than XP had 9 months from it's arrival. Perhaps one day your hardware devices will be added / or the drivers coded properly by the manufacturer.

I guess I'm just somehow lucky that Vista runs everything fine for me and all my hardware is supported? Do you think your singular Vista experience somehow equates to the same experience for the rest of us? Just because you've had a poor 5 minutes or however long using Vista doesn't mean the rest of us have.

Krest: As already said, use the 32 or 64 bit NoPE releases.

Just to add that my system is nothing out of the ordinary, nothing spectacular, but nothing craptastic either;

C2D 6400
4 GB Geil DDR2 800MHz
Gigabyte 965-DQ6 Mobo (using onboard ALC 888 audio)
Connect3D 512 meg x1950xtx Crossfire
4 x 320 GB internal Seagate Barracudas (ST3320620AS 7200.10's)
2 x 320 GB external (Enermax casing) Maxtor DiamondMax's (STM3320620AS)
Optiarc DVD AD-5170A
Trust USB 4 port hub
Trust USB (BT-2100p) bluetooth dongle
Belkin Wireless G USB network adapter
Actiontec GT701-WG router
32" Mirai DTL-532W100 LCD
MS optical mouse
Xbox 360 wired controller
Thermaltake Tai-Chi chasis
Tagan Easycon (TG-580-U15) 580W PSU
HP laserjet 2015
Trust wireless tablet (TB-4200)

All of which runs rather sweetly, without issue on Vista x64. And this is what, all thanks to Fortuna smiling apon me? Laughing

Did you miss the fact I had an argument there?

Naaaw, did I spoil it for you again Leo?

The insult is just spice because you're such an idiot.

And what is it with you and whining about your old hardware? Quit being such a jealous tool, get a job kid.

dominae you seem to forget that it took 2 SP for XP for everything to work quite ok, and there are still tons of fixes and updates for XP. You can't expect from new OS to be perfect, especially if it is from microsoft Smile

He probably was one of those that were saying "XP sucks, I'm gonna upgrade my P2 with Windows 98 and stay with that because XP is slow and doesn't support all my hardware" back in 2001/2002.

Nah, XP was fine at SP1. Before SP1 it had some issues, but for gaming it was better than 2000.

VISTA is worse for gaming. It's getting better tho, now that they got that beta-fix out for the memory issues with gfx-cards with 512+MB RAM. I played some game that used up like 300MB RAM in XP, in VISTA it used close to 1GiG.

They need to work on VISTA, but I think the next windows version is where it's at, maybe the features that VISTA needed to be the clear break from XP will be in that (like the new FS).

It's somewhat true, I ran 98/SE for a long time. Then upgraded to 2000 around 2001. And then XP in 2002. So I've been using XP since Winter 2002 or sth. Damn solid OS.

That new FS (wasn't really an FS per se, it was more of a superset on NTFS) was removed because it was way too performance-hungry, so if they put it back in, it will be even worse for games.

I don't have anything against Vista, it looks great, and it has many cool stuff, but it is definitely not for playing games... yet. That is why I'm using both XP and Vista...
