awesome

and ditto on ghibli

if you want lighter, entertaining stuff, you should look into anime series rather than films
films are short controlled bursts of whatever they contain
series are bold long strokes of mood
except commercial bullshit like naruto or dragonball etc etc

it's one one the best anime series out now thanks to it's great atmosphere, smart story and quality animation.

as for anime movies, you should try ninja scrolls.. it's pretty old but a great movie still.

Yeah that was a nice one.

I liked too Berserk (even if it's a serie and not a single OAV), you could try it.

the cowboy bebop movie. the whole bebop series was awesome, right up there with berserk for the most heart-ripping emotionally saddening endings.

Just a suggestion for some of those recommending - can you give some reasons as to why you think it's a good choice - it just makes it easier for those of us who haven't seen it to make a decision.

I find it extremely difficult to explain to people what it actually is I like about something, whether it be movies, a game, a song or whatever.I'll try anyway tho'...

I basically posted a wide array of genres in my post.

-The Gibli movies; that one should be obvious, they are among the highest quality ever made, and still are to this day. Vodka, Tales of the earthsea is released by 4 groups now. Wink Get the niizk release.

- Mind game ; weirdest dementia type movie I've ever seen, and that's saying a lot coming from me

- Memories ; simply 3 short stories I liked very much for some reason.

- Tokyo Godfathers ; Directed by Satoshi Kon( Paprika, Millenium actress, Perfect blue,...)

-Kakurenbo ; short movie, only about 30 mins long but very enjoyable and a little creepy.

-Beyond the clouds ; Simply the most beautiful and touching movie I've ever seen.Gorgeous artwork and animation. Every background looks like a small pastel painting. On that note Makoto Shinkai will soon have a new movie out. 5 centimeters per second You can expect another masterpiece from the man who is widely recognised as the true successor to Hayao Miyazaki.

-Wonderful days ; Korean movie this one, the director worked for over FIVE years on it, and it shows.

Dead leaves ; Action packed, extremely violent and reasonably short 50 mins.

As for series of this season I can heartily recommend Claymore and Seirei no moribito, especially the latter gets my stamp of approval.
People who liked the twelve kingdoms MUST watch this because it promises to be even better.

i reccomend the bebop series over the movie. I will check out deathnote but im a bit wary of japenese anime series as I always think theyre a bit pants.

I love any ghibli stuff, miyazaki. Spirited away is awesome.

And of course why hasnt anyone reccomended this yet? "TESTSUO KANEDAAAA.." Akira although I think Paprika has recently outdone Akira in the mindfuck department Razz

I also highly reccomend the animatrix, yes its mainstream, but its still amazing to watch Smile

I recommend 5 Centimeters Per Second, it premiered March 3 in Japan.

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4568

It's amazingly beautiful, I usually don't like romantic animes, be it movies or series. But this one absolutely owned. It's incredibly well made, everything was very nicely animated.

And the three intervening stories were told in a very good way, definitely a MUST-SEE.

Used to be Yondaime but forgot pass and what email I used on it. Doh. I had ~1200 posts or something, been around since NForce started or so, so i'm no new guy. Razz

I already watched cowboy bebop! It was very cool.
As for 5 Centimeters Per Second, I think that I won´t like a romantic serie Smile At least is not what I´m looking for at the moment.

Though I think 5 Centimeters Per Second is by far the best anime movie released in years, I've also got two other recommendations, also movies released in 2007.

First one:
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4151
There are releases of it out, with english subs and HD format.

I suggest not reading the info on this movie, I saw it without reading any info and I was so happy for that, the movie was awesome. It's like a mix of romance and um, sci fi. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a romantic movie in the sense of 5 Centimeters Per Second, this is more of a comedic romance movie with sci fi elements. It's awesome, and has loads of funny scenes.

It's very nicely made as well! To be honest, it's more friendship, rather than romance in this movie and well, yeah. Just watch it, it owns.

And another very different movie:
Tekkon Kinkreet

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4054
This one does not have a english subbed release yet, but there is a good quality version out, however it is raw. I know japanese so I could watch it, if you can understand japanese, by all means go grab it, it's out all over the place, shouldn't be hard to get it.

If you can't understand japanese, keep the anime bookmarked or something, because it was very good.

I don't really know how to explain the story, cause it's very weird, but i'll just name the good points:
* Good action
* Nice animation
* Very unique drawing and animation style (not cell shaded crap though Wink)
* Nice voice acting
* Very raw, with plenty of blood, gore and violence of all kinds.

If you've seen animatrix, you've seen the same drawing style. Check youtube for clips from the movie.

As for series, you should watch:
Seirei no Moribito

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4403

It's a serious adventure kind of anime. But don't confuse it with Naruto and the like, this aint no half-assed crappy series where they have to put fillers in.

This series has a fast pace, is produced and animated by Production I.G, the ones who animated the Ghost in the Shell movies, in other words, the animation and drawing styles are top notch. The story is also very good and deep, lots of things to find out. Watch at least 3 episodes before you decide if you want to continue though, because it takes 3 episodes for the show to really start, because a lot has to happen for the story to start.

A splendid series indeed. And if you end up liking it, check out Twelve Kingdoms (or Juuni Kokuki):
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=26
Also a wonderful show.

When you've checked them through, come back and i'll give you even more to chew on. ;>
