I got the eVga 7900GS KO and just used that coolbits registry thing to unlock the overclock feature with stock cooling.

Stock = 500 core/660 memory
OC'd = 587 core / 812 memory

Not too shabby I dun think Smile

How did you know when to stop overclocking, just guessing? When i first tried OCing it , i increased core by 40 and the temp went up by 6 degrees C. Im going to overclock my 7950 KO, but after it cools down a bit here in CA, im afraid its gonna blow up now from this freaking heat.

I use atitools to scan for artifacts. Smile

if you use the coolbits reg it automatically does it all for you. It'll stop before it gets unstable so you don't have to worry about locking your shit up and restarting. I do recommend after running it though that you drop each of the results down by 5-10 just to be on the safe side Smile

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815

Download that, then use the classic control panel to get to it. I don't remember how to turn it back on through the new panel but you'll figure it out Smile

7900 series = great oc cards, I have not jumped on the dx10 band wagon yet.. and my 7950Gt still does the job with todays games..

Ill give coolbits a try, have not over clocked since I went from ati to nvidia. It actually sets it to a stable setting (no artifacts ect) automatically ?

ya, I've never once got artifacts from it. but again, after it gets your clocks, lower them by 10 to be on the safe side.

Hey Spyke just remember that coolbits is extremely conservative with it's "too high lower frequency" threshold. For that reason I would just use Rivatuner and manually jump in a game after OC'ing and see if any artifacting occured.

ATi tools artifact scanner is dandy and all, but a lot of times it doesn't represent a real game. I'd get no artifacts in the scanner but when I would run a game i'd see the matrix.

When I had voltmodded my 7900GT back in the day, I took it up to 610/800 with coolbits. At that point it wouldn't let me go any further, so I used RivaTuner (Or any other app that has no safety feature, or one you can disable) and got it up to 670/840. (Could easily do 700, but i was a chicken)

what I don't like about those apps though, especially ati tool, is it doesn't stop the threshold check before it gets unstable and locks up and you have to restart your computer.ATI tools back when I tried it on my nvidia would just keep checking without telling me what speed it was at then wham, it locked up on me. Didn't know what speed it reached so I could go a little bit under that. none the less these speeds aren't too shabby. 660 and jumped to 812 isn't too bad either.

What do you mean? You can see the current speeds it uses...

And besides, why rely on automatic tools when you can achieve the most precise speeds only manually. Use the Ati Tool for the stress test.

Yeah, I've never locked manually trying to OC. I usually go in small enough increments where i'll see artifacting on the desktop and then just bump the OC down a bit. Hard-locks usually occur when you go all out with the core clock.

Ah I miss that 7900GT, at 1.5v core and the OC I had it was whipping the 1900XT's ass.

@ SpykeZ

Never really tried the "find max core" and "find max memory" atitools' functions, but AFAIR the status of the clock increments were always specified in the log file along the timestamp. Wink

I dont think my computer likes me very much. First i tried to use coolbits following this guide http://oc3dmark.octeams.com/tip02a.html, but the options doesnt appear, i did it several times, but its just no there. Then i tried ATItools, it tells my i dont have ATI card or the catalyst drivers. Then i tried nTune, it works when i do it manually, then i tried to do it automaticly it tells me i need to have NVIDIA Nforce2 or higher (i have 7950 KO), it idles for 20 minutes wihout doing anything. Sad.

use reg file, right click desktop > properties > settings > advanced > click your video card tab and that should bring up the screen, you may have to click "addition properties" or whatever

lol, actually the right name is atitool, do you have really tried that app? => http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/
Sounds weird that it asked you for catalyst drivers, knowing that you have a nvidia, btw are you on vista?

nTune can overclock both gfx cards and nforce motherboards, it gave you that when you were in "adjust GPU settings" and that you tried "automated overclocking"?

To Spyke, nope not there, http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitledpo3.jpg i looked all over the place, its just not there. Maybe CP is conflicting with it?
Oh thanks sensi, now it works. THe one i downloaded first was from the link you posted above to extremeoverclocking (ATI Tool (Yes it works on Nvidia cards)), strange, but it told me no catalyst drivers or no ati card.

I see, their link over there is misleading, you tried a different app named "ATI Tray Tools", a "tweaker for all ATI Radeon cards/chipsets", that's why. Smile
