Xbox 360 passes PS3 on Japan sales chart on strength of exclusive title
By Ben Kuchera | Published: November 12, 2007 - 11:46AM CT
One thing has been true for the PlayStation 3 since its launch: it consistently trounces the Xbox 360 in Japan in terms of weekly sales. That appears to have changed. According to Japanese metrics tracking firm Media Create, the Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 for the week of October 29 through November 4. It wasn't a landslide—the Xbox 360 only sold around 200 more units than the Playstation 3—but even coming close was quite the accomplishment for Microsoft.
During the past few months, it has been rare for the Xbox 360 to sell more than 3,000 units in a week. In contrast, the Sony typically sells between 10,000 and 20,000 PS3s per week. What caused the jump? Last week the Xbox 360-exclusive Ace Combat 6: The Fires of Liberation was released, a title that sold 76,000 units during its first week of sales. The only software title that sold more was Mario Galaxy for the Wii. The Japanese may be blasé about the Xbox 360, but the signal sent is a clear one: a good exclusive will still move units. The Xbox 360's ¥5,000 price drop also may have contributed to the sales boost, but Sony is countering with the ¥39,980 yen 40GB PlayStation 3.
Although the 360's triumph is getting headlines, it has to be noted that the sales numbers of both systems still lag the giants of the Japanese market. In a typical week, the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS trade the number one position back and forth, proving that the Japanese market for portables is still going strong. Sony's release of the Crisis Core edition of the PSP-2000 has done much to boost sales of that system. And the Nintendo Wii has been camping in the number three slot for the last two months. Neither the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360 come close to the sales numbers of these systems.
When Ars Technica spoke to Microsoft's then-VP of interactive entertainment business Peter Moore, one of the questions asked was what Sony was doing better than Microsoft. "Potentially maintaining some franchises from Japan that I wish I could get on my platform," he answered, and the sales numbers from last week proved how much Microsoft has to gain by paying for more exclusivity in Japan. While Peter Moore wished that he had Mario on the Xbox 360, the huge jump in sales with a title like Ace Combat 6 proves that the more big-name, exclusive titles you have, the more hardware you can sell—even in a country that has historically been icy towards your product. Games remain the most important thing in the console war.

I've just ordered myself a PS3 for Christmas, gift from my missus. Also ordered Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank. Will be ordering Drake and Haze b4 xmas too. I hear there is a GOW 3 title in the pipeline too.
I am no PS3 fanboy by any stretch, in fact, I am definately more biased toward the 360 but there are enough exclusives now for me to warrant a purchase.
I got the 40Gb version as the price is right and if I want to play PS2 titles I'll fire up my PS2.
After I've completed the glut of games we've just been blessed with on the 360 and only Prostreet left (can't think of any more biggies) I'm gonna be ready for a few fresh titles to see me through to the inevitable Easter releases.
bring it!
