i think i remember someone mentioning that the game FreeSpace 2 has been given away for free by the devs and you can download it from the web. is it true, and if yes, where?

No no your wrong. But not far off being right. The license agreement of FS2 stated that owners of the software may copy it freely and give it to friends or acquaintances as long as they made no profits of the game. It can be found legally on any torrent site i guess. just have a look around.

Well I guess like most open source games (Quake for example) the source code is free to download, but you still need to data (levels, model, music, textures) to play it properly,... but I didn't check it out so maybe I say crap
