This was posted in the crysis thread.. but thought it deserved a thread of its own
What are your thoughts on the matter and article ???
"It's just a matter of how much shelf space is being awarded to the PC in the States. It's kind of hard to find PC games at most stores, but you go to Germany and PC games are at the checkout counter at the freaking drug store. Literally."

Over here in Aus you still get PC games on shelfs in EB, in chain stores and places liek that. Nut alas our market is very tiny compared to the US.
He does make some very good points but about the figures being skewed as they don't include subscriptions and paid downloads, only retail.

consoles will probably start to go the same way as pc gaming once they get some good mmos and all the console gamers get addicted.
look at any console games section in the specialized gaming shops and most the games are just shit fillers that wont be bought when people get into mmo's.
warhammer: age of reckoning has already been shown running on an xbox360 , i think conan is going to be released on the xbox360 aswell, ps3 has a few mmo's of its own on the way

There's a lot of topics that come up in that interview, but on the independents specifically, I don't think the independent game makers will ever disappear, much like in the movie industry. When games started, anyone could make a game in your garage. As games cost more and more to make, that same resource is fostered in mod communities & the ever-present casual game market.
But will there be 200 people independent crews like Valve? Maybe, probably not. Being independent is kind of the anti-thesis to being big. As you get bigger - make more money and therefore spend more money - you'll probably buy out/recruit smaller dev teams (portal?), risk less and whore out the sequels more (hl series) for the shareholders. You create & promote your own platform and a few more dev team purchases and then all of a sudden you're a behemoth who has lost his way (EA).

A major understatement
Although he makes a few oddball comments in praising EA's poor handling of their product, and there's a worrying suggestion about the future independence of the company, it's nonetheless a great interview! It's nice to finally have the big hitters coming out and speaking up for the PC with all the shit that's getting said.
