Posted: Fri, 21st Sep 2007 01:33 Post subject: Your Top 20 Games of All Time! |
|
 |
Okay I took a bit of time out to think this up for another forum and I didn't want to let it go to waste ( ) so lets have your lists up for display as well please! If we get enough unique submissions maybe we can formulate an NFOrce list based upon the most selected. Just list your favourite top 20 games of all time (include comments and screenshots if you like, but they aren't necessary). The criteria is entirely up to you. I personally went for games that I'd still enjoy playing to this day, eschewing nostalgic reasons for 'quality' - but if you want to pick old favourites that's up to you, it works both ways.
[Incidentally I wasn't sure where to put this as it includes both console and PC titles]
Super Mario 64
I just can't fault this title. It's perfect. The difficulty and length of the game is just right whilst the gameplay is timeless.
Fallout 1 & 2
Both titles are the epitome of RPG gaming with amoral choices abound (hey, killing children is fun). Combat being the only downside as it can be twitchy and slow at times meaning big battles can test your patience. The beauty of Fallout however is that in most cases you can simply talk your way out of or around combat. Role playing games don't come much better.
Deus Ex
The best first person shooter I've ever played. Skilfully combines RPG elements with a first person perspective and an engrossing conspiracy fuelled plot. Unlike Half-Life however, the plotline is the focal point and doesn't play second fiddle to set-pieces. Gives you a lot of leeway in your approach to objectives and makes you feel a part of the unfolding drama.
Goldeneye 64
Terrific in singleplayer and multiplayer. I don't think there's been a better first person shooter on any console since. The facility level is just so cathartic, I love it!
Operation Flashpoint
There's no other game like Operation Flashpoint. Whereas most titles will put you in the role of the hero where everything depends and rests solely upon you, Flashpoint is an accurate depiction of war and the role an individual plays. You'll do well to just survive your first play through, and the campaign is full of classic moments. Everyone remembers the mission where you need to haul ass to an extraction point during the middle of the night for example, and there are many, many more nailbaiting moments throughout. The tailored AI and the included sandbox mode also leaves you with unlimited amounts of replayability once you've completed the singleplayer campaign.
Grand Theft Auto
It's what I bought a PS2 for, and it's probably going to be the reason I plump for a PS3. I personally favour Vice City as the best of the bunch but they are all pretty much the same game. Very good replayability and (in the case of the recent titles) entertaining & cinematic story lines. Generally faultless - especially on the PC where the mouse and keyboard combo helps with aiming.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or
Zelda: A link to the past
They should be separate titles but I couldn't decide between them. Classic gaming where my only caveat would be how tiresome the dungeon grinds can get.
Championship Manager 01/02
I only started playing these when on a whim I tried out the demo of Championship Manager 3. I was hooked from that point on and regularly succumbed to the "JUST ONE MORE TURN" addiction that is synonymous with the series.
Baldurs Gate 1 & 2
Conventional RPG gaming to perfection. It even had multiplayer co-op. Somewhat more linear than the Fallout series with a stronger narrative, but still great games with masses of dialogue and role playing elements to enjoy. The NPC characters were fleshed out as well, with personal squabbles and relationships. They don't make 'em like this any more
Half-Life
It's easy to discount Half-Life now, but at the time it was an exceptional game with some of the best examples of artificial intelligence and enemies around. First class shooter that beats Doom and Quake et al for daring to be more.
Starcraft
took all the best bits from every other RTS and trimmed it of the fat. Had a lot of fun playing the singleplayer campaign with it's cinema quality cut scenes and even more fun playing it online through battlenet. Even better when you consider it came out around the time when RTS games were so popular and the market was completely saturated.
Shogun Total War
Before it got so complicated and bloated with micromanagement the Total War series was deceptively simple and utterly addictive to play.
Silent Hunter 3
Atmospheric, terrifying submarine simulation that captures the horror of being trapped in a tin can extremely well. Ever watched Das Boot? Play the game!
Richard Burns Rally
The best Rally title to date. Nothing comes close to the amount of realism and excitement this game elicits. With a force feedback wheel you'll be both physically and mentally exhausted after reaching the finishing line. The learning curve is brilliant in the way it rewards persistence yet continually challenges you, and it's the only racing title where you'll be genuinely fearful of going too fast - as every bump, nook and cranny is simulated and one mistake is enough to ruin your race. If your not mashing your accelerator in a racing game then it's obviously doing something right...
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
I actually didn't think much of these at first as it seemed like Bioware had completely sold out to the console crowd ( ) but after getting off the first level, which I hadn't realised merely served as a tutorial, the depth of the game became more and more apparent. Obviously it lacks the true non-linearity of most RPG's and the role playing elements themselves are pretty much non-existent (or peripheral) but the dialogue, plot and NPC character's are what make this game so enjoyable. The NPC's themselves come across as fully fleshed out individuals, and I actually became quite attached to them. Great fun, and quite emotional for a video game.
Super Mario Kart
Not much of a single player game but hellishly good fun in split screen mode. I'm leaning towards the original Mario Kart, but that might just be nostalgia as the n64 version is just as good. Battle mode is where it shines.
ICO
Just a beautifully simplistic game. Harks back to platformers of old but with an artistic sensibility that is hard to describe. If you liked Shadow of Colossus you'll love this. The relationship between the two characters is sweet, and how you interact doubly so.
Mafia
Fair to say that it's Grand Theft Auto set in the past with all the satirical humour stripped out. It's still one of the best single player experiences you can buy. The plot itself is obviously familiar to anyone with a passing interest in gangster films but its executed extremely well and the characters really come to life (okay, not really ).
And that's my lot!
Here are some other games I might have selected, and you might like to consider for your lists;
- System Shock 2
- Metal Gear Solid
- Grim Fandango
- Syndicate
- UFO Enemy Unknown
- Theme Hospital
- Sim City
- Broken Sword
- Rainbow Six
- Swat 3
- Thief
- Civilization
- Homeworld
- Resident Evil
- Doom
- Quake
- Giants
- Worms
- GTR2
- Battlezone
- Elite
- Privateer
- Hardwar
- Sensible Soccer
- Planescape Torment
- The Sims
- Rollercoaster Tycoon
- Caesar III
