Dled some HD films, but as they are in .mkv format it seems that they can't be streamed. Also tried with TVersity and no luck. Read somewhere that you can simply rename the file extension to .wmv, but also that wont work. Any ideas?

As i am running over WLAN (wireless) could this have something to do with it?. Basically that my speed is not enough etc.

I read somewhere a while back that the 360 cannot read the mkv's fast enough into the buffer because of the high quality, so what you can do is pause the video at start and wait 5-10 minutes and then play !!

Probably better converting into avi

Edit: found it, it was using a program called Transcode360

Hm, from Mediaplayer11 I cant even get the dam thing to play at all, simply says the format is not supported. From TVersity the screen goes black for like 30 secs (no way to hit pause) then it looses connection.

Transcode360 or TVersity (whatever its called) or any other similar app doesn't really let you play the files in their native format though, it just converts them on the fly, therefore you're gonna lose quality on those HD videos you wanna watch.

Yea fiddling with Transcode360 now. But as it only seem to work with WMC (tell me if I am wrong here) And that's the worst POS program next to excel, at least my end, it crashes, freezes, looses connection etc. And it only seem to play WMV files natively. Anyhow gonna try some more here.

What would be the alternative but?

You can not just rename the extension to wmv, but maybe you can mux the content into a different format. Do you know what codecs are used?

Try this app http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ . mkv is not really a format but a container. You can take the video and audio streams from a mkv file and put them in a avi or mp4 container instead.

Edit: Sorry, seems like GSpot doesn't support mkv files

Ok fisrt off .mkv is a container for mp4 format videos.

In the mkv file there is a Vidieo, vaious audio files in diff launguages, subtiles and just about anything else you may find on a dvd.

easyest way to play them is connect you pc to your hdtv. If thats not posible your going to have to convert them, this takes a long time.

google mkv to avi or mkv to wmv for furter details.

or most new film that a relesed on blu and gay or hdtitty format get ripped to WMV. search usenet or you fav download place for the wmv versions.

If you do go down the route of converting WMV may be you best choice as you can be sure it will work on your 360.

I can play the stuff on my PC no prob, but its the streaming to the 360 that is the main prob. I guess i have to revert to plan B and only DL stuff in WMV or simply buy a Blue Ray player
HD-DVD seem to be dead and buried, at least soon Wink

I use videora Xbox 360 converter to convert the mkv files into a 360 compatible format.
Using the MKV passthrough option it only takes about 45mins to convert a full movie. I can then stream it, or if it is lagging I just burn the file onto a RW dvd. Perfect HD files every time.
The only problem is that you must activate and log in on the administrator account in vista for it to work. Running the program as administrator via compatibility tab does not work.

That .mkv file contains x264 video which is not supported by the 360.

Use Videora Xbox 360 Converter using the mkv passthru setting, or reencode to 1080p .mpg

Works a charm.

1080p .mpg in decent quality? How big is the output file, 30GB? Or 40GB? Laughing
I guess you meant MPEG4.

The easiest solution would be TVersity, if it worked. What's the problem? Do you get an error message or doesn't your X360 recognize the stream?

Thanks guys for all the tips here. I got the 360 Converter but did not try it out yet.
TVersity basically plays it on the PC, but as soon as I stream the TV goes black for like 20sec and then simply says that there is no connection. I am starting to think it could have to do with my Inet connection, only 3Mbit, I know piss poor, but according to Deutsche T-com that as fast I can get where I live...SMACK IN THE FRACKING MIDDLE OF FRANKFURT!!!! Anyho, will put this little project on hold till the weekend as I am back working and really don't like to fiddle with this stuff 1st thing after work

Dont bother with any transcoding bullshite, unless you want to watch your HD movies in SD. MKV will not pay on the xbox. You need to convert it to somthing compatable. Everthing else you try is just wasting time.

oh yeah the abilty to transcode movies has fuck all to do with your internet speed. your home network will be plenty fast enought. also transcoding is cpu/memory intensive. if your pc is shit you wont be able to do it.

T-Versity runs just fine. your cpu is a fucking monster for what it can do. You might have to just fiddle with it to get it to work.

I ran tversity on my laptop with 1/2 your Horsepower with no problems.

Takes about 10 minutes to convert a 40-minute long episode. Will only work for up to 720p though.

You select an output folder before you start the conversion.

I'm getting the same problem. Specify folder/file and it vanishes when conversion complete.
