|
 |
So i assembled a new barebone yesterday and the idle temps of the E6750 were around 30C to 32C. Today i noticed that the temps have gone up to 38C to 40C during idle on Vista desktop. I can't really explain what caused this increase from yesterday. The CPU heatpipe is still firmly in place and since it's brand new it can't be dust either. There is no temperature problem with the barebone, max temp is 50C with both cores at 100%.
Do you guys have any ideas why the idle temps are up from yesterday? I was thinking that maybe it's the thermal paste that's causing it?

Vista idle is not really idle with all the AERO and stuff going around, so this can be a reason for the heating. My laptop usually heats when in Vista (idle), but not in XP.

How you measured cpu temp?

Measured the temps with the XPC Tool from shuttle. It reads the values directly from the Bios. There isn't really a problem with the temps, i was just wondering why the temps have gone up almost 10C while on Vista desktop, in just one day.

Try going into Vista Basic skin and stop services like Indexer and Sidebar. Let it cool for an hour and measure again.

Don't know much about vista but there maybe some app there or in your bios which is throttling your cpu fan. Some boards do that to reduce noise.

When you first measured the temp, vista was already running? 'Cause I don't think it has anything to do with the OS...
Did you put thermal paste between the cpu and the heatsink? Is the fan spinning at the same speed (or is it a passive cooler)?

if he didnt have any paste between the heatsink and the cpu, wouldnt the thing have allready fried?
yeah im betting the bios has some fan automation crap. turn it off and see if that helps.

Sure if it didnt have any paste it would have fried, but there might not be enough, or even too much. Some heatsinks also come with a thermal pad (and it usually sucks).

I did put thermal paste between the heatsink and the cpu. It doesn't have anything to do with the OS, the Bios shows the same values.
And it's not the fan automation either because no systems settings have changed from yesterday. I did turn it off yesterday and when i turned it on today i noticed the temps were noticeably up.
Maybe it was not enough thermal paste?

Did the heat sink mounting/fitting (775) have those sort a push pins?
Could be that one has popped out = not perfect contact to the CPU.
I wish they would redesign that dam fitting mechanism, it sucks big time, and is a pain in the ahole if you have a big heat sink to mount, like a Scythe Ninja etc, cut my fingers when I mounted mine I remember.
The thermal paste should just be a VERY FINE! film evenly spread out. If you over do it you will never get good temps!

Maybe you checked prior to the CPU reaching it's regular IDLE temp the first time?
Maybe you haven't taken into account ambient temperature? Your room get hotter?
Maybe the 2nd check really wasn't complete IDLE, more like it cooling off after use?
Maybe you didn't apply the TIM correctly, straight line down both cores and or paper thin coverage across the entire heatspreader?
Maybe you shouldn't care because either way the CPU is well within thermal boundaries?
Hmmmm?

Good points. I'm thinking that maybe i used too little paste and didn't spread it properly across the TIM. But since the temps are very well within the limits I'll wait till the weekend to reapply the paste.
Thanks for your help guys.
