so yeah, I've been using vista for quite a long time now and I'm very happy with it overall.
it's a good OS and doesn't deserve all the bashing it received.
But there's one thing that's been bothering me.
Every once in a while, vista decides that it has to change the layout of folders to something different.. just like that.
Like I go into a folder, and half an hour later when I view it again it went from Medium Icons to a List by itself.
It's been happening quite a lot and with different folders and I just can't seem to find the reason for this. It's really annoying because I prefer good old medium icons pretty much everywhere.
Does anyone know something about this strange problem, and maybe if there's a solution?

XP does that to me sometimes to tho. I like all my music is list format, not icons and I;ll go play a song, close the folder, reopen it and its in icons....weird eh?

Windows will keep in memory the layout of few thousands of folders, i prefer to turn off this option (Folder options > View > "Remember each folder's view settings") because i have far more folders than this and thus windows will have the bad habit to forget the older folder layout to remember the last one changed... I apply the same layout for all avoiding such inconsistency.

*It is for XP, see below for Vista.

My bad under vista it is rather stored there:
Code: | HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU |
and
Code: |
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags |
Edit: Found some registry file that should do the work for you:
Also it seems that it was this Vista's "Auto Template Discovery" that was causing you troubles, have to be disabled.
Code: | Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
; This is a Vista ONLY Folder Repair tool, This tool will force Vista to remember your folder settings by
; Modifying registry entries. Descriptions below explain what each step is doing.
; Steps:
; 1. Open up explorer and go to Tools->Folder Options->View and uncheck Remember each folder's View settings
; 2. Double Click this registry File
; 3. Restart Computer before doing anything else
; 4. Once restarted, bring up explorer again and put the Check back that was removed in step 1.
; 5. All folders on the computer should now be in the "All Items" format. Since Auto Discovery is now off
; you will need to go to your shell folders (Pictures, Videos, Contacts, Music, etc.) and set them to the
; template you want, apply to subfolders, etc.
; Clear out Folder Settings left over from XP:
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]
; Clear out Folder Settings for Vista
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]
; Modify the Folder Storage space to 20000, this will allow the saving of settings for up to 20000 different folders.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00004e20
; Turn off Vista's Auto Template Discovery. This keeps vista from deciding on it's own what type
; of Folder you have (ie, picture, videos, docs, etc) This will keep vista from changing what you
; have already set for a folder as well. Notice this value is in the Bags Key that was deleted
; in the settings above. Remember this is there because if you decide to manually go delete
; your Bags Key, you will lose this value and auto-discovery will turn back on again.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]
"FolderType"="NotSpecified"
; ***** NOTE FOR VISTA 64 *****
; Users will see a a Wow6432Node in registry traces when Folder settings are saved.
;
; PATH:
; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
;
; This is virtually linked to the Vista 32 Folder storage location located at:
; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
;
; What happens in either location will be a duplicate of the other location. | cf. http://thevistaforums.com/index.php?s=93490e177f048babdfd0baa0d112b5ea&showtopic=23106&pid=150666&st=0&#entry150666
