Im trying to find out which player/codec combo is the best for playing h.264 on my old 2.6 P4. I know that most people use VLC but some say that CoreAVS + some random player would work faster. Can any of you pro tell me what's the way to play 720p video on my relatively slow pc? Crying or Very sad

Coreavc + media player classic.

A 2.6 P4 should be fast enough to play 720p x.264 no matter what decoder you use tho'.
Best quality FFDshow, best speed Coravc.
Don't use vlc, it stinks. POS doesn't even display subs right...

I would say ffdshow + media player classic = k-lite codec pack or cccp

How much of your CPU is used for decoding a 720p movie?

latest k-lite mega codec pack+KMP

plays all files except .bik

very smooth hd playback and lots of features

and no p4 2.6ghz is not enough for hd, u will get some out of sync problems
to enjoy hd 100% u need at least cpu with dual core, they are dirty cheap right now [amd?]

If it is 1080p, software decoding of H264 being fucking cpu hungry, if your cpu is at 99% for your player process then you have your answer, otherwise check for any broken codec problem.

this is 720p, just dont understand it.

720 and 1080p xvids work fine, and also 1080i transport streams work perfectly, its just anything in the x264 codec :/

will try kmp sometime tonight.

does anyone also know of any extra x264 codecs for mac?

Thx for your input ppl.
Btw, can any hd player take advantage of a 64-bit system? And what about overclocking(i can overclock my cpu to 3.1 easy)?

CoreAVC sucks donkey ballz as a decoder. Rolling Eyes It's fast because of all the macroblocking it produces. And don't ask me to prove it. I have already, in another thread, so either dig that up or go to doom9.org and look there for detailed information.

To answer the question, either ffdshow or the powerdvd decoder (it supports hw acceleration of h264 and vc1).

Yea, quality wise coreavc stinks, there's no denying that.
I use ffdshow + mpc myself and it decodes 720p x.264 perfectly smooth on just a single core 2ghz with 1 gig of ram.
Extremely clean system tho', not connected to the internet and no unnecessary processes running.

Edit, ok, small mistake, it was a 2.2 Ghz. Embarassed
Wasn't mine so I had to ask,lol

Rolling Eyes BTW, FYI, VLC uses the same library as FF (libavcodec) to decode video, so to say it sucks is just dumb.

I said VLC sucks because it can't handle styled softsubs, not because of the video quality it produces, Leo. Probably a moot point for most people but not for me.
I mostly watch anime and almost every encode you'll find makes use of styled softsubs or even softsubbed karaoke efects. VLC can't deal with those. Last I checked anyways.

Strange. Displays subs fine here. Maybe some strange case on special kind of subs? Neutral I even think the subtitles module is the same as ffdshow's.

You're probably thinking of hardsubbed effects/styles.
I'm talking about .ass, .ssa and such.
Last time I checked VLC reverts all softsubbed styles back to the default font it uses, which is buttfuckin' ugly imo.
I use vsfilter for displaying subs btw.

ASS = "Advanced SubStation Alpha" Laughing

kuroi, you can set all the ASS/SSA settings in VLC, and I think there's a font renderer that will display them as they were originally intended. NVM, vobsubfilter is great as well.

prob a bit late but if your using CCCP and CoreAVC, open the FFDShow Video Decoder Configuration and look for the H.264 and disable it so it knows to let coreavc take over. If you have had the HD version on power dvd installed at any point then your probably using their shitty decoder over core avc so in start > run copy and paste this then run it.

Code:
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\VideoFilter\CL264dec.ax"

Bumping this motherfucker Smile

1080p x264 runs like shit on my computer. Is it a hardware problem or could it be the software? Honestly I've installed so much shit (ffdshow, coreavc, powerdvd etc) so I don't know for sure what is actually decoding the video. Hardware specs in sig ...

edit, apparently I can't read a few posts up about disabling powerdvd from decoding video ... will have to try that when I get home ...

But why? PowerDVD's decoder supports hw decoding, and your 8600 has support for hw h264 decoding... The first thing I'd try is to remove both ffdshow and coreavc and reinstall PowerDVD.

ok, will give that a try instead.

basically what I'm also asking is if I should be able to play 1080p stutter-free on my hardware Smile

Well, I think you should be fine with that CPU and a hw decoding GPU.

If you got newer CPU then for best possible x264 quality playback use MPC + ffdshow by xxl (download) + matroska splitter is the best.

ffdshow by xxl because it supports multicore cpu's.

so I removed old ffdshow, vlc, powerdvd... decided to try glottis' suggestion first since it was less work (don't have powerdvd install setup anymore) ... and.... IT WORKS! cpu not maxing out either ...

thanks for the help guys ... now, am I correct in assuming that MPC + ffdshow by xxl does not support hardware decoding? and do I really need to worry if all is playing fine? I tested with a high motion scene in The.Matrix.1999.1080p.HDDVD.x264.Sample-ESiR.mkv btw.

No, ffdshow is software only. What I can say is that your CPU is not that great, so on a movie with a very high bitrate, and trust me, some peak very high, you will probably get a desyncronization that may or may not eventually sync (depending on rest of the movie's bitrate). But it depends on the releases you get. Scene releases hardly ever peak high.
