|
 |
Sunday I was playing Assassin's Creed and didnt turn off the 360. Monday when I got home frm work, the 360 was showing the RROD....fearing its the end of the box, I turned it off....Today morning, I turned it on and its working fine....is the 360 on its last throes??? Mine is one of those few unbanned consoles still running xtreme 5.2 fw
can i just send it to MS if it dies???

Leaving it on that length of time probably killed it, it's only a matter of time now. The same thing happened to my first 360, it worked for a little bit after the first RROD, but if you play games for any length of time it'll happen again. It'll keep doing it taking less time before each crash until it's constant.
You could get away with sending it to Microsoft, people with modded boxes have done it before. But if you got it from a good retailer they might replace it for you straight off as long as you have a receipt. I've done that, it was no problem at all. They didn't even check it to see if it had really failed.
I guess this is one of the risks you take if you mod your 360.

Easy to fix the RROD, search around for the xclamp fix. Lots of people carrying out same mod

Like Dirtymurt wrote.
I have removed the crappy X-clamps when I got the red lights, and my box are still alive after 5 months.

3 people including myself have sent there firmwared xboxes back into microsoft (mine about 6 months ago and a friends 2 weeks ago)
got different xboxes back i think with the same outer casing.
My friend spoke to the shop he got his firmwared at and they told him there was no need to take off the firmware to send it back to microsoft.
He sent it back and got another machine in about 2 weeks and has had it firmwared again since.

dont send it to www.xboxdummy.com
they have lousy service
they "fixed" mine and it came back to 3 red lights 3 game sessions(1-2 hour) after that
so waste of time and money.
all they do is cut the plastic and put extra useless fan
when the problem was the gpu not cpu.
anyway from that point on i fixed it myself with extra fan.
i still get 3 red lights sometimes but i can fix it myself no need to pay XXX$ for some idiot that think he knows what he is doing and gives false warranty.
if you know what you are doing give full warranty(they changed the kind of warranty rhey give from time to time because machines keep going back i guess)
anyway
just my 5 cents from my own experience

there is no 100% sure way to fix a box that has 3 red lights.
xclamp replacement or other simpler tricks to get it working again may work for some, but there is always a chance it won't work for you, or at least not permanently.
sending your 360 to some unofficial repair service (like xboxdummy) who are just gonna do the xclamp replacement or something for you might improve the odds over doing it yourself if you're not experienced, but it's also not certain that it'll come back 100% fixed.
the only way to make sure your 360 lives on is to never mod it and just send it to microsoft for repairs.
but for modders, a red ring 360 could very well mean the end of your 300$ investment.
personally, I got the red ring of death about half a year ago and fixed it myself using the 12 cent fix. it seems to have worked, but every time I play I fear that my 360 will die again any second.

Ive also had 3 red lights a few times now but not for a while! I think mine was caused by the Nyko Intercooler I had attached to the back of the console. After Id removed it, the problem seemed to just disappear.
May the NFOrce be with you always.

Could have been a brown out overnight (short power cut, enough to reset the machine).. That caused a RROD on my machine, was fine after a reset and haven't seen one since..

I had the RROD 3 three times.. I replaced my X-clamps. It isn`t a permenant solution, but if I get the RROD back I put new Thermal paste between the GPU and the heatsink. let it overheat (for like 2 minutes) and the RROD is gone..
This is the link to the X-clamp replacement: http://rbjtech.bulldoghome.com/pages/rbjtech_bulldoghome_com/XClampIII.htm

I dont see why people break their warranty seal when modding... I took a hair Dryer and set in in front of the M$ warranty seal for about 5 minutes and the sticker came off with tweezers, no problems... That way if something does happen, you can still Get M$ to repair it!! just my 2 cents!

A friend of mine had the RROD. He succesfully repaired it himself.
He used the shroud modification and the x-clamp replacement. He also used some kinda Aluminum plate mod he found. Soemthing about cutting out the plate, poloshing it, and outting it between the CPU and heat sink... I'll see if I can get links to what he used and post them here.
Oh, and he laso replaced all thermal paste on the unit (the CPU and GPU) with arctic silver 5.
Anyway, his unit has been working flawlessly ever since.

if it does it again get the secondary error code. Mine did the same thing as yours then one day it just wouldnt boot it had 3 red lights and a secondary error code of 0020. I did the xclamp replacement and it works fine it even runs a little cooler. The best long term fix is a total reball of the processors. Or a combination of a reflow + the xclamp mod. For me if mine dies again i'll just sit out a coupla months til the 65nm 360 is in wider circulation and get one of those.

not anymore, which is annoying, coz i fucked up my benq when trying to solder it, meaning i have a 65nm mobo chipset with no dvd drive and no drive key, absolutely fucking useless piece of kit.

having those 0102 errors all the time:)
once i amonth i mean
and i repair them myself using same "method" as stated before.
clean>.paste>>2min sometimes more untill it soldiers itself>>wait for cool down>all is fine.if its not i just give it more time and then wait again and its all good
i have external fan on it,motherboard complely open(no box at all)
so i dont know what this piece of shit needs to cool down.
i have another fan on the cpu which never gives me problems.
so the problem is the gpu all the time with those 0102 errors.
have to wait for ice cooling system to come out:)
afriend of mine didnt mod his and he already sent it to ms 3 times everytime got "new" refurbished one and it happened again.
so its waste of time and money sending it to them all the time
they are clueless, this all design(not just cooling) is fucked up from the base and up.
