Great, so I buy a PSP the other day... it comes with family guy sweet movie and daxtor the game...
I love family guy so I wanna pop it in and see how it is... so I look at the UMD and it looks like a small CD encased in a plastic protective cover... I’m like on, get the cd out obviously, so I break the cover since it doesn't want to open, I put in the cd and nothing happens...
Long story short, after reading the manual I realized just broke a brand new movie.... I am already getting too old for technology.

divx player is totally owned by AVC (quality-wise). same conversion time but the result is incomparable.

I never had any luck with those homebrew avi players, plus if hes got a slim that opens up more issues. I havnt tried one in awhile so maybe they actually work now, but I never bothered cause converting isn't so bad.
To watch my avi files I convert them with PSPvideo9. I use version 1.74, and I would not recommend the new versions if your gonna try it. I think It got bought by some company and they did a "commercial" makeover. I tried the latest version and it was pure trash, but this old one is great. I always choose the SP/368x208/29.97fps/768kbps stereo/128kbps setting. It takes about 10 minutes for a 150 meg file.
Found a link for the version I use: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_encoders/psp_video_9.cfm/v1_74
Keep in mind its really only for AVI, it does support other file types, but you need to use avisynth or something, and run scripts for them to work, and while it works, its just a pain.

WHY oh WHY would you need to play AVI on PSP? It doesn't play UNCONVERTED avi anyway - it has to be resized to 480x*** otherwise it doesn't play! Plus it doesn't have a resume playback option so you have to FFW manually!
Thus as you have to do the conversion, then why not convert to AVC and enjoy UMD-quality video without any stuttering AND with a resume playback option?

PSPvideo9 has AVC conversion as well, I use mpeg4 though. Not too picky about the quality as the source isn't the best to begin with, so it wouldn't make any difference. But yeah, I agree, don't mess around with unconverted stuff the PSP just wasn't meant for it. I run batch jobs when I'm not using it, queue up like 10 conversions and when I come back its all finished.
