IGN was hit with editorial layoffs today, with sites 1UP, UGO and Gamespy expected to be shut down.
"We are focusing on our two flagship brands, IGN and AskMen. Unfortunately, as a result, we have made the decision to close sites and restructure our teams accordingly," a company spokesperson confirmed to Joystiq.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
How many video games related sites do you need anyway ?
I know it was probably because they were making money with the ads and stuff but still. They had too many of the same thing and sometimes you need to cut into the fat.
It's funny because 1UP and Gamespy (especially the latter) are both better than IGN, since there's still some criticism left in their articles and sometimes I even agree with them when I skim through the reviews for the lulz.
That was probably an annoying factor for the IGN Doritos HQ, hopefully from now on they can count only on the incredibly unbiased and fair view of their pedigree journos...the same ones who write for AskMen.
IGN sold GameSpy Technology to Glu Mobile last year. The matchmaking service and gamespy.com are separate things.
Oh
Though one of the game I've always liked play, Flatout 2, had it's online Gamespy service shutdown a few months ago, I thought may have been a precursor to this news.

You should try gameranger
I've used Gameranger before, as well as Tunngle, Hamachi, Garena and Evolve however, I've never really like using them as they seem to be a pain to set up (ports, networking metrics etc). When you're trying to get a few friends to set up one of these programs, you're almost guaranteed at least one of them is going to run into problems and usually we spend more time trying to fix the problem than playing the actual game.
IGN once bought VoodooExtreme, later known as VE3D. It worked well for a few years, then the creator left (Apache) and then it went downhill and suddenly IGN shut it down. That's their modus operandi. No idea how they make money off doing crap like that.
